GARRY MAXWELL Obituary

Garry Troy Maxwell 1967 ~ 2009 Troy Maxwell was born October 6, 1967, and died December 6, 2009, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is the son of JB and Donna Maxwell, St. George, UT; brother of Sherrie (Adam) Mann, St. George; and Scott Maxwell, St. George; uncle to Scott Anderson, West LA, CA; and Angela Harvey, St. George, UT.Garry grew up in Carmel--by--the--Sea, California. His gift and talent of making and keeping friends began there. When he was 16 he moved with his family to St. George, Utah in 1983. He graduated from Pine View High School in 1985. At that time, he moved north to the Wasatch Front to pursue his passion in the Culinary Arts. Garry excelled in his career and mentored many through the years. He was an artist with a wealth of knowledge of culinary technique, but more than that, he was a cherished friend to countless people. To quote one who knew him well, "I will never forget his matchless wry humor--as delicious and robust as his food. Garry epitomized passion; you could see it in his food and in his love of music. He will always live bright in our memories." Garry's laugh will echo in our hearts forever. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George. There will be a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Mortuary. Interment will take place at the St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, St. George, UT, (435) 673-2454. Friends and family are invited to sign Garry's guest book at www.spilsburymortuary.com

I am deeply saddened to hear this news. Garry was my best friend from the 2nd grade through high school. We hung out together every day at Carmel River School. His family was wonderful. There are people in your childhood who shape who you are and what you become. Garry was one of those people. I miss you Garry. So much.

When I hear Mark Knoffler, I will think of you. When I roast a turkey,I will think of you. When I need a reality check, I will not only think of you, but I will have a smile on my face knowing that you put it there.

Peace,
I love you and I miss you,
Terri

It was with tremendous sorrow and shock that I heard of Garry's passing. It was only a few months ago that he and I reconnected through mutual friends on a social networking website after a hiatus of over two and a half decades. It was pleasure to experience in those exchanges the same quirky wit and exuberant charm that enlivened the times we shared at school in Monterey. It grieves me that we will not have the opportunity to catch up further. My sincere condolences to his family and to his other friends, his absence will, I know, be keenly felt.

I knew Garry best as "chef" and had the opprotunity to cook with him at four different restaunts. Garry's ability to love through his passion for food was unsurpassed. Garry truly was a mentor to many. He lived out loud was never afraid to express his passions. My life has truly been blessed by knowing him. Garry will live on in many. Thank you chef.

Goodness, even though it has been many years since I saw Garry, I was thinking of him just a couple of weeks ago.
I had the pleasure of working with him at Brumby's. We always had a great time. Later, it was my pleasure to enjoy his culinary talents at Fresco.

Garry was a big man with a heart to match. I will treasure my memories.
Thank you, Garry, for the life you lived.

It's been my pleasure getting to know Gary as one of my students the past several months.
Gary jumped in with with full passion and was excited about working with computers. He was obviously a gifted student.
We will all miss him up at Salt Lake Community College.

The news of Garry's death shocked and saddened us. It is no kind of hyperbole to say that if it weren't for him we would have never met. Garry was that rare breed of artist: brilliant in his areas of endeavor, willing to share his gifts freely with all knew, yet possessed of a sense of self-awareness and humor that so many of us lack. We were honored to be Garry’s friends and, in the past, his collaborators. He touched so many with his talent for cooking, music, and other areas. The world is a bit smaller today with his passing. Rest easy, Garry. I’ll play our Disaster Area tape tonight in your honor.

Garry truly was his own genuine person. There was never any pretense - he hated that. He lived life with an intelligent and open mind, enjoying and enduring the experience. He was warm, kind, and generous to others. He also was direct and sometimes if necessary, blunt. He always enjoyed a good laugh, and his wit was the driving force of his humor. A hard working, creative culinary force here in Utah, Garry touched many lives through his passion for food. You Garry, will live on with us through your recipes, memories, and shared experiences. We are blessed for the opportunity of having you in our lives. Thank You, Chef.

I was lucky enough to work for Garry in four different places throughout the years. He always inspired me to make better food. I always remember he would say, "Another day that God lets me live is another day he eats poorly." Although I will miss you deeply, at least God will eat well again.

The memories made with Garry will always remain with all of us who were fortunate to know him. Many years spent at Fresco,Fuggles,Cafe Bacchus, just to name a few, gave me the opportunity to know this wonderful man. His laughter, cooking, and friendship will be greatly missed. I'll be tipping a few back for YOU.

I will forever be affected by Garry's ability to 'live large' and passionate and yet be so real and sincere. Garry had so many friends and fans and I feel lucky to have been one of them. I will continue to make Garry's potato salad and Gouda Au Gratin Potatoes, but never ever like he did. Garry will be deeply missed.

Uncle JB, Aunt Donna, Sherrie, and Scott,
Our hearts and prayers go out to you right now in this time of mourning. In the teenage years, I always looked forward to spending time with Garry. He broadened my horizons and was a good example of someone who worked hard and set goals. As an adult, I admired his focus and love for life and food and I was proud of him for his accomplishments. His laugh was contagious and always brighted the mood. I am blessed to know him and you.
With love,

I worked with Garry at a Mexican Restaurant in St. George in the mid-eighties, then we both found ourselves in Park City for a bit. I remember his warm nature and dry humor. I considered him my friend, although i hadn't seen him for 20+. I just want his family and friends to know that I thought he was an interesting and cool guy.

I miss him. I loved his food. I loved his humor. I loved his laugh (he had a "real" big man's laugh). Whether it was working with him or late night trips to Denver to see a concert, or just hanging out, he was beautiful human being. I miss him.
