Micaela Nelligan Obituary

Micaela Therese Nelligan 1959 ~ 2006 Micaela Therese Nelligan, 47, died peacefully on December 11, 2006 at her home. A professional actor, animal advocate, feminist, union agitator, and wyld woman, she lived life passionately. Micaela fiercely loved her husband Stephen, her family, and her friends, and will be missed tremendously. She was a friend and protector to all in need. She was a born teacher and on occasion a formidable adversary. Particularly loved stage productions in which she played were Happy Birthday Wanda June, George and Frederic, A My Name Is Alice, Saturday's Voyeur, and the Kathy and Mo Show. Among a long list of professional film productions were Baptists at Our Barbecue and The Maldonado Miracle, and a fan cult performance in the game Tex Murphy: Overseer (for more, see IMDb.com). She was preceded in death by her father Joe, her sister Kathleen, her Auntie Sister, and packs and prides of animal friends. A funeral mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2006, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 670 South 1100 East, in Salt Lake City. Also on Monday, a memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Theater, 1575 South State Street, South City Campus, Salt Lake Community College. My very dear Maddie,
Again with the unexpected!
I was in awe of your self confidence, of how you lived on your own terms and found your bliss. I can hear your wicked, machine-gun laugh and picture character after character spilling from your endless spring of creativity. You have been an inspiration to me. You are crystal clear and alive in my heart. Love always, Syvvie.

My Dear Hawkeye,

How sorry I was to hear that the world has lost you and your wild ways. I have often recalled your joy in life and your passion for what you felt was just, qualities you already had when I met you in 6th grade. And I will never forget our shenanigans at Clayton Jr. High School (I'm pretty sure the staff there will not forget us any time soon, either!)

I have read all the many tributes that your colleagues have posted. Their respect for you speaks highly of your professional success, and am honored to say that I saw your stage debut when we were in 8th grade. Even then you had amazing talent, and knew exactly what you wanted to do with your life. I am glad that you got to live out your dreams, although I am also pretty sure that no one could possibly have stopped you. Once you put your mind to something, it was pretty much a fait accompli.

I am sorry that we lost touch, but that is so often the fate of childhood friends who move far apart. My mom and dad used to send me reviews of your performances and periodic updates whenever they ran into you. You were like a blazing star in the firmament of the city's most talented, destined to flame more brightly than all the others and whose flame sputtered out before the rest.

Go now in peace, old friend, "and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

Just a few weeks ago I mentioned Micaela and her unparalleled performance in "A My Name is Alice". No one else could belt it out like Micaela could. She was indeed bigger than life and will be sorely missed by all who ever knew her in this life.

Ginger,

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I have nothing but the fondest memories of the day I met Micaela. Within the first hour of knowing her, we had plans for a sibling adoption. I was so young, yet so impacted by her beauty, purity, and laughter. She had and still has your spirit and your love for humanity. I still laugh at the Kathy and Mo show in my desperate attempts to replay her character for my family. She was a blessing to all her knew her and will be greatly missed. I love you.

Micaela was a truly unique person. A spritied individual, driven, forthright, hilariously funny and so talented. Micaela was a great friend, a caring neighbor and a kindred spirit to me. Micaela played such a huge role in my life and I was lucky to have shared so many wonderful times with her. I will remember her forever. I will miss her dearly. My condolences to Stephen and all Micaela's family and friends.

I was so saddended to hear of Micael's passing. I have such fond memories of her as a performer and as a person. She lived live to it's fullest. I can almost hear her singing "Summertime". My heart goes out to Micaela's friends and family in this loss we all share.

Our friendship began some 30 yrs ago,and continued in time. So many laughs, through so many loves. Fun was always on the menu. Our times at Lothlorien will remain in my heart for ever. In George and Fredric you took my breath away. It was in that moment I knew we would forever be a part of each other...from "trips" to the Salt Lake, our circus act with "Oh, but Hey!"and eventually your marriage to Stephen.
What a wonderful priveledge to bear witness to such a companionship. In my heart I know you are with us, and please know that until my last breath I/we
will always be there for your beloved Stephen.
Love,
P.S Ask Telmont what the hell?

I never pick up the obituaries ever. Ever. And then yesterday out of nowhere I turn directly to Micaela's. I know it wasn't chance. What can I say but that meeting Micaela gave me a glimpse of the kind of woman I want to be. She damn well said what was on her mind. She was gutsy, smart as all hell, balls-out funny. I was privileged to do the run of Tony N Tina's wedding every day with her for 4 months. Her obituary truly speaks so much truth about her - but words could never do justice to the force of nature that woman was. This world would have benefited in incomparable ways with another 40 years of her wonder. And now a shout out to all the ladies who know that Micaela had some pretty important things entirely figured out - ladies, it's time to take up the mantle - live fearlessly and with great love and depth to bring the violent goodness to the world that she did. Our hearts are with you in your time of loss Stephen. And I too can vouch for how much that woman adored you. A love like that is something I still dream of. Bless you for knowing her value and may the gifts she brought to your life sustain you in the important journey ahead.

Dead dear Micaela... With a heart courageous, a spirit undaunted, and an infinitely compassionate soul, you took on this life full-tilt. Heaven better be ready! The memories I hold are those of boundless joy, and that grand rolling laugh. We began to explore who we were in those early days at the U, and it was my privilege to have your help and support. Your heart was a thing of wonder, and it will be missed. My heart goes out to dear Stephen, and the family. She is a twinkling star watching over us.

Micaela you always, always followed your big, sometimes impossibly big, heart. You made me head-back-belly-laugh scream with delight more times than I can count--wickedly irreverent--never the easy way out—uncompromising in your exploration of the margins, the taboo and the righteous—you took me with you and made me laugh all the way back home. I will miss you and send my deepest sympathy to your wonderful family. Cheers love.

Micaela, this absolutely sucks. I hate not being able to say goodbye in the right way. Thank you for encouraging me early on when I first got into Utah's acting program and didn't know what the hell I was doing. Thank you for your wonderful smoky voice, big laugh, and lead vocal on "Goin' to the Chapel." Flights of angels take you to your rest.
love,

Thank you, Micaela--for all of the laughs, hugs, heated debates, Xanadu parties and Lothlorian escapades. For brilliant performances and two in the morning actor heart to hearts. For spur of the moment trips to get our clocks cleaned in Wendover and whining all the way home. For forgiveness and inspiration and the chance to reclaim an old theatre buddy. Thank you for introducing me to Stephen and sharing New Years Eve. More than anything else, for your great heart and your passion for life. I love you and will never forget you.

Cedar City, 1977. Fascinated by this fearless, ruddy-cheeked, twinkle-eyed Irishwoman. Crazy love, pink glow. Skinny dipping road trips to Pah Tempe. Breaking down in your vintage Datsun on the way to Vegas. A shared summer with Shakespeare. Callow and careless with your heart... made whole again with your forgiveness. Throughout it all, awestruck by your talent. Nothing you couldn't do, and thankfully you weren't shy about letting everyone know it. "More cocktails for my men and horses!" Fast forward to Mark Chamber's University of Utah Reunion of a few years back and there you were, swimming playing splashing laughing with the children in that pool on that perfect warm summer evening... being you, sharing your joy.

Micaela was an artist. Her acting was always intriging, interesting, powerful. She loved her parents, Joe and Ginger, inherited strength and courage, along with a marvelous sense of humor. She always met adversity with her wit and intelligence. The best artists, bring quality to their friendships. I think Micaela lived her life as a work of art, as all Irish girls should. I have never known her to be mean-spirited, or insincere. Whatever she had, if you were her friend, whatever you needed was yours. It is a rare and beautiful thing. Joe and Ginger raised a great person, when the chips were down, Micaela, always stood up.
Thank you, Micaela. There aren't many left like you, and I am grateful you were there when I needed you.

Only Micaela could break dance at a wedding in a short silk dress. Only Micaela could get away with liberating the neighbor's animals from injustice. Only Micaela could do the Scot's Rap "Go McTavish" and make us all believe it would be given a Grammy. And only Stephen could put up with it all. Goodbye my friend.

Micaela, I love you so much. You are branded in my fondest memories as a genuinely first-rate human being. Your heart, soul, searing comedic wit and earthquaking laughter, all big and wonderful as life itself, will resonate within me always. Thank you for being so alive, so out loud and proud and bursting with cosmic energy and radiant joy. You were the most entertaining roommate I ever shared a life with. You are one of the best reasons I've ever had for being human or even near a stage. (Thank you for the great performance in Vapor Trails.) You are one hard-rockin' belt-poppin' mama, and the world will never be quite the same without you. May flights of Irish angels sing thee to thy rest. Cheers, baby!

I first met Micaela on the set of the Huntress in 1999, and from then on we were soul sisters. I loved her dear friendship, wonderful sense of humor and passion for everything she did. She was an amazing woman and you couldn't ask for a better friend. I'm glad I got to see her a few weeks ago, and she looked great, by the way. She will be sadly missed by many, many people. Stephen, I'm so very sorry for your loss, she loved you the most.

Micaela will be greatly missed by the entire Flynn family. She was a bright fire that ignighted our lives. Her laughter was like a smiling heard of buffalo stampeding through a china shop. I had the privledge of playing her son many years ago - what a MOM!
She will be toasted often this Holiday season by our entire family.
Much love to Stephen and family during this time,

I remember the first time I saw Micaela. She was on stage in Voyeur. I knew immediately she was someone I wanted to know. No one "bore their testimony" quite like her. I feel incredibly blessed that I got to know her that year. She was one of the bravest women I had ever met. My heart is heavy reading of her passing and while I know that I will never see her again, I know that the sound of her laughter will always resonate with me. The world is a little bit darker with her gone, but the heavens are a little bit brighter with her there.

Stephen, I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
