WWII MARINE'S REMAINS FINALLY IDENTIFIED AFTER 77 YEARS
PFC USMC
Robert Kimball Holmes was serving in the United States Marine Corps on board the USS Oklahoma when Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. He was 19 years of age at the time of the attack and was killed during that attack.
As soon as possible after the attack the bodies and remains of bodies were collected and buried in graves in Hawaii with the marker "Unidentified" at the site of burial. In May 2018 the military authorities informed the family that his remains were positively identified and that arrangements were being made to send him home to family.
Robert was born May 8, 1922 in Wichita Kansas and moved with his family to Salt Lake City as a teenager. As soon as Bob turned 18 he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. At the time of his death he was survived by six siblings and his father Edward D Holmes. His mother Ola C Holmes predeceased him in 1938.
As of May 2018, he is survived by numerous nephews and nieces and an extended family. He was single at the time of his death.
There will be a military service for him on August 20, 2018 at 10:00 am at the Salt Lake Cemetery, 4th Avenue & N Street, SLC, UT.

I was honored to attend PFC Holme's funeral this morning. Like so many who attended, I never knew him or his family but I'm so happy that their uncle was able to finally come home. I wanted to show my respect and gratitude for his sacrifice and to thank him for my life of freedom. Thank you Private Holmes. God bless you and your family.

How Wonderful to see an obituary for one of our soldiers after all these years. How wonderful it is that he finally got to come home. Even though it has been 77 years, I am sure bringing him home has reopened the pain in your hearts. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Have peace now!

I wish to express my gratitude for this young man's service. I am sorry that your family has had to go so long without being able to identify his remains. A life taken so soon. I'm always in awe as I see obituaries of young men and women who chose to place their lives on the line for me, my family and the rest of America. Our freedom has been purchased by these committed and patriotic individuals.

Thank goodness for those brave young men who were willing to sacrifice their lives for freedom and for posterity. His was not given in vain. May God be with his family. Though those alive today may not have had the honor of knowing him personally, they may be assured that he was a great soldier and returned to his Heavenly Father with honor.
