Shannon Cloward Obituary

Shannon Wilson Cloward
1961 ~ 2011
Shannon Mary Wilson Cloward, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter, and friend passed away peacefully on December 2, 2011 surrounded by family after her courageous battle with cancer. She was 50 years old.
Shannon was the oldest of six children born in Burlington, Washington June 25, 1961 to Kirk and Paula Wilson. She attended Burlington-Edison High School, where she was Student-body Vice-President her junior year and President her senior year. She also excelled in tennis, basketball and debate. Due to her leadership skills, she was one of two people selected from the state of Washington to attend a student government seminar in Washington D.C. She then went to Brigham Young University where she graduated with a Bachelors Degree in history. There she met and was sealed to Randy Cloward in the Seattle Temple. They had 5 wonderful children together. Randy and Shannon continued to be close friends throughout the years despite divorcing.
Shannon always lived life to the fullest. Her battle with breast cancer began when she was 35 years old but never slowed her down. Tennis, marathons, triathlons, hikes, BYU sports, Jazz basketball, Wilson family holiday parties, and her job she loved at Jordan Valley School working in Special Education were just some of the activities that enriched her life up to the end. She was an incredible and devoted mother to her children and was compassionately devoted to taking care of her special needs son Kevin, who brought her much joy and fulfillment.
A faithful, devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she spent her life in the service of her faith and others. She touched and inspired so many lives as she served and loved those with whom she came in contact. She was a natural leader, serving in many positions of leadership throughout her life.
Shannon is survived by many family members that will miss her greatly, her five children: Amy (Adam) Sybrowsky, Alison, Paul (currently serving an LDS mission in Scotland), Kevin, and T.J,; her parents - Kirk and Paula; her brothers and sisters - Craig (Cari) Wilson, Holly (Steve) Crandall, Wendy (Calvin) Hunter, Kari (Eric) Hull, Keith (Lynsi) Wilson; many nephews and nieces; and her loving grandchild, Ava.
Many have been touched and influenced for good by Shannon. She was constantly looking out for those who needed a friend or a place for a holiday dinner.
She would want to thank those who cared for her over the years including Dr. Difiore, her nurse Kristen and the rest of the staff, and also hospice services and her nurse Camille.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that contributions be made in her memory to the LDS Church Missionary Fund, 50 E. North Temple, SLC, UT 84150.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Granite Ridge Ward, 9575 So. 3100 East, where a visitation will be held 9:30-10:45 a.m. Interment Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery/Mortuary. Online condolences: www.larkincares.com

I am so sorry to hear of Shannon's passing. I was a neighbor of Shannon's when we were in grade school. My entire family of Wallaces have so admired the entire Wilson family. Though we moved away from Washington back in the late 70's, we followed everyone through the yearly Christmas cards. What joy we have had over the years watching the family grow. Shannon will be truly missed. Love and prayers to the entire family.

Shannon was a special individual who always impacted others in a positive way. Her commitment to family, her determination to see the positive in situations and her caring for others will be remembered and admired by many. It is with sadness that I acknowledge her passing, yet feel honored to have known her throughout the years. My heartfelt sympathy to her family and friends , we've lost a beautiful woman inside and out. May God watch over her always!

I met Shannon in first grade at Allen Elementary. Although we lost touch over time, I have always remembered her fondly. She was so kind and always concerned for others. The one thing I remember vividly about Shannon was when I was telling her about junior high PE class in Mount Vernon and how we were all required to wear a special exercise outfit we could purchase at a store downtown. My thought on the subject was these outfits were awful looking. Her concern was "what about people who can't afford to buy one?" Sort of a random thing for me to remember after all these years, but I think it is a great example of what an unselfish, caring person Shannon was.

My heart goes out to the Wilson family. You are in my prayers.

Dear Bro. and Sister Wilson,
I am so sorry for the passing of your Daughter. She has been an inspiring young woman that I knew when I lived in Washington State.May the Lord bless the Wilson Family.

Dear Wilson Family:

You are in my heart and prayers! I am a better person for having known Shannon. I will always cherish the memory of the MWC Conference Basketball Tourney in Vegas earlier this year. Shannon was flat out NUTS! I have never seen a crazier BYU fan. The fist pump, the loud singing, the bopping out of her seat every time Jimmer scored (which was pretty much ...ALWAYS!), the yelling at the refs, the dancing during time outs...pure bliss for a basketball fan. I will never forgot my son James asking me after the first day of games "Dad, did you see Danny's aunt? Man...she sure loves basketball." Indeed she did! What a gem! She will be missed. Wonderful woman!!!

Shannon was an incredible lady. Her smile warned the heart of anyone she met. She never spoke a negative word and her enthusiasm was contagious. I ran in some races with her and saw her frequently at church events. She always shared a hug and kind words with me. I love Shannon and consider her such a sweet blessing in my life.

I knew Shannon in high school. She was someone I looked up to for her athletics and her intelligence. She made me feel that it was okay to be smart and because of what and who she was I ran for ASB Treasurer. And I actually won! I know the pain of losing a child and the age makes no difference. Just keep in mind that she is no longer in any pain and her love for her family and friends will keep you strong.

Shannon will live on in all of us.

I knew Shannon in Texas and we only ever communicated with Christmas cards, but her card was always the one I looked forward too. They were so inspiring, just like Shannon was. I'm a nurse in a NICU and I can't tell you how often I have referred to her when parents have a child with disabilities. She looked on Kevin as one of her greatest blessings. When our family talked about Shannon we always said she would go straight to the Heaven and there's no doubt that's where she is. Our prayers are with her children and family. Judy Hampton

Shannon, the last time we talked, I told you that you were one of my favorite people of all time, and I meant it. Obviously so many others felt the same way. Even though my job was to help you and Kevin, I think I was the one that benefited most. You are such a great mother, teacher and friend. I learned so much from you and it is an honor to know you. God Bless you and your family.

Shannon showed all of us how to make luscious lemonade with the lemons we are given. She lifted us even when we were comforting her. She created happy times with the single sisters and hiked and biked with family groups. Remembering neighbors was one of her gifts. The light she lit in each of us will remain. Thank you, Shannon.

Shannon was always a wonderful example of determination and cheerfulness that I saw as I was growing up in Washington. I saw her at running races in recent years and was always greeted with a happy smile and a kind interest in how I was doing. I have been impressed with her valiant fight with cancer. Shannon will be greatly missed but always remembered.
