Eldred Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 6 to Apr. 8, 2013.
Eldred Gee Smith
1907-2013
Eldred Gee Smith, Patriarch Emeritus to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, April 4 , 2013. At 106, he was the oldest man in Utah.
Alert to the end, he spent the day before his death attending the temple with other General Authorities and handling personal business.
Patriarch Smith was born January 9, 1907, in Lehi, Utah, to Hyrum Gibbs Smith and Martha Electa Gee Smith, the second of eight children. His childhood years were spent in Lehi; in Los Angeles, California, while his father attended USC dental school; and in Salt Lake City, following his father's call as Patriarch to the Church.
After his father's untimely death in 1932, Eldred worked at various jobs to support his mother and siblings during the Great Depression, including painting the ceiling of the Tabernacle, delivering ice on his back, and wallpapering for Bennett Paint & Glass.
Eldred married Jeanne Audrey Ness on August 17, 1932 and they had five children. She died in 1977. He married Hortense Hogan Child in May 1978.
During World War II, Eldred worked on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. A lifelong engineer, Eldred registered several patents and enjoyed perpetual tinkering, especially on the building and rehabilitating of clocks. His culminating hands-on project was the design and building, with his wife Jeanne, of their home on St. Mary's Drive.
Prior to his call as a General Authority, Eldred served as a branch president, bishop, and high councilor. Called as Patriarch to the Church in 1947 by President George Albert Smith, he served with nine prophets. He received emeritus status in 1979, but continued to give patriarchal blessings in his office in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building until recently. He gave over 18,000 patriarchal blessings throughout the world during his service as Patriarch.
Patriarch Smith was the oldest living descendant of Joseph Smith, Sr., and of Hyrum Smith, brother to the Prophet Joseph. As the oldest son in a line of oldest sons from Hyrum, he inherited Smith family artifacts dating back to the beginning of LDS Church history. For almost fifty years, he gave fireside talks, many with his second wife, Hortense, using these artifacts to tell stories of the Smith family and the LDS Church beginnings. It is estimated that over 500,000 people heard his presentations over the years. Eldred has donated many family papers and relics to the LDS Church and BYU library.
Eldred was preceded in death by almost everybody. He stopped reading obituaries ten years ago, as contemporaries' names were not showing up any more. Among those welcoming him home were his parents; his sisters, Cleone, Helen, Miriam, Verona, and Donna; his brothers, Hyrum and Barden; his first wife, Jeanne; his second wife, Hortense; his daughter Audrey Gay Vance; and two grandsons. Eldred is survived by his daughter Miriam (Ted) Skeen, sons Eldred Gary (Elizabeth) and Gordon Raynor, daughter Sylvia Dawn (Craig) Isom, 22 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great grandchildren. Eldred was also a beloved step-father and grandfather to Hortense's two children, Carol Jane Burdette and T.R. Child, and her eleven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 10, at 11:00 am at the Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 S. Wasatch Drive. Friends and family may call Tuesday evening, 6-8 pm, at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 S., and at the stake center Wednesday, 9:30-10:40 am. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery.

We remember well his visit with his wife to Miami and our home to make a touching and spiritual presentation to our entire stake. It is still fondly remembered by many. One brother, no longer active, was especially touched by seeing and feeling the relics that were displayed, especially Alvin's box. He had long ago received his patriarchal blessing from Eldred.

I had occasion to call his office in the Church office building on several occasions about questions that I had that related to the items, in his possession, related to Hyrum and Joseph. He was always willing to take the time to talk with me. My everlasting assessment of Brother Eldred G. Smith is that he was approachable and considerate of those asking him for information.

My father, Milton R. Hunter, and Eldred G. Smith were close friends and fellow General Authorities. Patriarch Smith spent a lot of time in our home and I learned to love him for his gentleness, goodness, and humor. He and Dad built beautiful sandstone retaining walls, a pathway, and a fireplace at our home. When we talked in his office before he gave me and my sister patriarchal blessings, he knew things about me that he could not have known without the inspiration of the Spirit. I shall miss this dear man. May the Lord bless and keep his family.

In working with Brother Smith for the last 25 years, I have never met a man with more energy and passion for life. His desire to continue to go to his office at the age of 106 is a marvel to me and a true example what we are capable of. I will always have the fondest memories of our meetings and the times that he and Hortense would come and present their Firesides to our groups. Thanks for the memories...

Elder SMith was kind enough to present a program including the Alvin Smith tool box to our Singles Ward in the Ensign Stake a few years ago. A sister who had impaired sight, was offered by this good man to feel the inside of the box, where the gold plates were carried through the translation process. She wept with gratitude as this occurred, being given by Elder Smith this special opportunity to use her sense of feel rather than sight. What a great man to share this with all, even those with impairments of life. I will miss my association with Elder Smith in our Sons of Utah Pioneers Chapter. . . . William Kettley

Dear Gary, Elizabeth and family,

I know you will miss Patriarch Smith, but you have wonderful memories that will sustain and comfort you. Although I only met your father a couple of times, I feel that I know him through your many stories, Gary.

Elder Smith's influenced many generations as he fulfilled his duty, traveling the world, blessing others and bringing light in a world filled with gloom and trouble. I pray that the family will feel the tender mercies that Elder Smith gave throughout his long and wonderful life

Patriarch Smith gave me my Patriarchal blessing in 1963. My father drove me to Salt Lake from our Home in Mississippi. I remember going to the old Church Office Building, and the grand experience it was.

I was working at ZCMI in 1966 and was a friend of Patriarch Smith's daughter Sylvia (what a cute little redhead) in 1966. My soon to be husband, Von and I asked Sylvia's dad if he would marry us in the Salt Lake Temple. He was so kind to do so for us. He gave us great counsel, as newlyweds. We took heed to his words and will celebrate our 47th wedding anniversary on 14 Dec 2013. What a blessing it is, that he was able to serve to his last day. May we offer our condolences and love to his family at his passing?

What a wonderful privilege it was for me to serve as Patriarch Smith's Secretary from Nov 1966-69 at the Church Office Building. He was such a good man, always kind and thoughtful, faithful and cheerful as he so greatly enjoyed his unique and special calling to give Patriarchal Blessings to all those who came from all over the world. It is such a tribute to him that he attended the General Authority Temple Meeting the day before his passing. His corner office on the 2nd Floor held many Smith Family artifacts of the early history of the Church being a direct descendant of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. There were many calls for firesides to show the box that once held the Book of Mormon plates and bear testimony of his ancestors. He referred to it as the “box talk.” I'm so grateful for his example of faithfulness to the end. May his family posterity ever be blessed with love and blessings at this time.

My dear sweet friend. I am so grateful for our special years together. I have learned so much from you, especially how to keep moving, no matter what the age, in strength and style. I have watched you so faithfully fulfill your calling. With only minor misses, you have been to every scheduled work day and meeting, never complaining but always ready to serve. I have loved your tenacity, your humor and your attention to detail. I hope as I go forth to serve a mission, I can take with me all you have taught me. I will forever cherish my special time with you.

Brother Smith left a legacy of faith, loyalty, love and devotion to The Gospel of Jesus Christ. I was his neighbor for 20 years and I remember fondly being I his same ward. An elevator was installed in the stake center I think for brother Smith but he never used it. To me he taught me to never give up in life and to always keep on moving forward. I saw him at church just a few days before his passing. He was going about doing The Lord's work to the very end of his life. I'll never forget my time serving with brother smith in the monument park 15th ward. My prayers be with his family during this tender time.

I know that there are many who received their Patriarchal Blessings from Elder Smith. In our family, it is a cherished story of how our convert parents, still learning about the church organization, received their recommends to receive their patriarchal blessings, and then loaded up the car and traveled to Salt Lake from Albuquerque, New Mexico. When they arrived and were asked if they had an appointment, they were dismayed and embarrassed, but Elder Smith kindly invited them into his office and gave them their blessings anyway. We are so grateful for this, and cherish their blessings. Thank you.

I was sad to see the passing of Patriarch Smith. I am the granddaughter of Ashael and Silas Smith who were the brothers to Joseph Smith Sr. We spent many wonderful times at different reunions and family programs. His presence will sorely missed by us all and pray for comfort with his family at this time.

I am glad that I took the opportunity to get acquainted with Brother Smith. I talked with him at his office on several occasions and attended the presentations that he and Sister Smith were so kind to put on.
I am the Great-grandson of Joseph Armstrong Fisher the brother of Hellen Fisher who married John Smith. I am Garth Fisher Croft, Son of Claude Fisher Croft and Grandson of Frank Croft.
Eldred G. Smith was a good and gentle man. He has gone on to his reward and joined with his family that went on ahead of him.

My wife and I were married in the Salt Lake Temple by Brother Smith , March 15, 1980. I still to this day remember his kind inspired words as he gave my new bride and I council that has strengthend us these 33 years. He and his wife even took the time to come to our reception later that evening. We both feel so very blessed and greatful to have had the honor of knowing and feeling of the special spirit that was sent down from heaven to bless so many of our lives. Our prayers go out to the family, may God's peace be with you all during this time in your life.

We fondly remember the Inspiration, Love, Kindness and Charity of this sincere follower of Jesus Christ. Through all of the many seemingly small things he did, he has led many to Salvation. He truly was a dedicated saint and friend. We will miss him, but rejoice in his 'graduation' to a better world. Always, Tom & Kay
