Edward McDonough Obituary

1938 ~ 2014
Edward Joseph McDonough of Salt Lake City died Monday, November 17, 2014, of a lung disease.
Ned was born November 24, 1938, to Mildred Anne Devine and Utah Supreme Court Justice Roger I. McDonough. He was raised in Our Lady of Lourdes parish and attended school at Uintah, Cathedral, and Judge Memorial, graduating in 1957. Ned attended Notre Dame and the University of Utah, graduating with a Masters in English from Utah in 1966. He married Grace Mary "Gay" Gallivan on August 13, 1966 at the Cathedral of the Madeleine. They had three children Edward Joseph, Michael Roger (Renon Warner) and Grace Anne.
Ned briefly taught English at the University of Utah before following his father and his brother, Roger Jim, into the law. He graduated from the University of Utah Law School in 1970. He joined his brother's firm, Jones, Waldo, Holbrook and McDonough, and was later of counsel at Berman and O'Rourke, prior to opening his own estate-planning practice. From 1985 through 2002 he developed and wrote the "Point of Law" column in The Salt Lake Tribune.
A private pilot like his mother before him, Ned enjoyed all aspects of aviation. He was an avid skier, a poet and a playwright. Ned was a devoted husband and father, a beloved uncle to nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces, and friend to generations of Preston Street children.
He was preceded in death by brothers Roger J. McDonough and John V. McDonough. In addition to his wife Gay and his children, Ned is survived by his brother Gerald Michael "Gary" (Ronni), his sister Anne Moore, and sister-in-law Betty McDonough.
A vigil service will be held Friday, November 21, 7 p.m. at the Neil O'Donnell Mortuary, 372 East 100 South, where friends may call from 6 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, November 22, 11 a.m. at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church, 1975 South 2300 East. He will be laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 4th Avenue and T Street.

I'm sorry I missed connecting with you and Ned over the many times I visited my parents in SLC. I still remember clearly the time we four flew to Idaho in about 1967, and hitchhiked to town in a Thunderbird and you 8 or so months pregnant. What a trip!! Gay, if you see this, please let me know. To all McDonoughs, I'm so sorry that Ned is no longer with you, but his gentle spirit survives with you always. I had the pleasure of editing Ned's Point of Law column on The Tribune's editorial pages. He was always so humble and apologetic about making changes, or whatever, but he made the job easy and interesting. My deepest sympathy to Gay, Michael, Edward and Grace Ann. Such a fine family.

Dear Gay and family, I was always so very fond of Ned and of you, Gay. I regret Ned's passing and regret not being there to celebrate his life and mourn his loss. I am in Michigan and unable to return. I shall raise a glass to him and to you.

So enjoyed representing Ned at the law firm of Jones, Waldo, Holbrook & McDonough. Their were 13 attorneys when I came to the firm. Loved his sense of humor. May you RIP.

Gay and Family -- I am truly sorry to hear about Ned. I will always be grateful for being able to work for him my first summer after starting law school. I learned so much from Ned, and also learned that he has a wonderful family. He will be missed, and I will remember him fondly.

I was so saddened by this news. Ned was a great friend in high school. I'm sure he hears the lilt of Irish laughter. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

ned's story telling cadence was so warmly unique. he would do subtle little stutter steps, as if to let you catch up and get ready for the next leg of the trip he was taking you on. and ned's hypnotic effect with children, that sense of wonder he would build by explaining how something works, or especially when asking a "huh" question to an unsuspecting seven year old, like "well, why do dogs have four legs?" i love you ned, i love you, mcdonoughs. you are in my prayers. jake

Another amazing member of the McDonough family! My childhood was filled with nothing but good memories of this entire family and I know that they are happily reunited. I can't wait for the day to party with them again! Rest in Peace Ned. Jayne Welsh Mohammadi
