August 25, 1930 - January 25, 2017
After 86 years of a vibrant life, Nancy passed away after a brief illness on January 25th. She lived a life of adventure, romance and generous service to others that has been an inspiration to those who knew her. She was the only child of Frank and Anne Drought of San Antonio. In her early years, she was an avid horsewoman competing (and winning) many shows. Later, she took up flying, a passion of her father's. At 16 she was the youngest multi-engine rated pilot in the United States.
She graduated from St. Mary's Hall where she developed many lifelong friends. She attended Wellesley College majoring in Art History. Her love for art was a passion that continued throughout her life. She graduated in 1952 and returned to San Antonio where she was a German Club debutante and Duchess of Masquerade in the Court of Opera during Fiesta in 1953. During this time, she met Robert Pope Wallace from Corpus Christi and they were married in November of 1953. She poured herself into her new community serving on many boards. Among her most passionate efforts were the Art Museum of South Texas, the Corpus Christi Symphony, Bethune Day Nursery and Public Television. She also taught art history and archeology lectures in public schools across the city. She and Bob were part of a dynamic, lively circle of friends and were famous for their wonderful dinner parties with delicious food, lively conversation and even costume on occasion!
She and Bob moved to San Antonio in 2002 spending most of their time at her beloved home on Diversion Lake. In San Antonio, she was active in the Colonial Dames and the Alamo Heights-Terrell Hills Garden Club. She rekindled many old friendships in San Antonio while remaining close to her friends in Corpus Christi. After a long illness, Bob passed away in 2013. Her faithfulness to him during his illness has been an inspiration to family and friends alike.
Family was most important to Nancy as she researched distant ancestors and maintained contact with far-flung relatives. Nancy also created a warm, beautiful gathering place at the Lake for friends and family, hosting many family reunions there. She also enjoyed traveling across the country to visit her cousins.
Nancy's passion for the arts has been passed on to her family. She spent many a delightful afternoon at the McNay and SAMA museums with her children and grandchildren. In fact, it is thanks to her that the family continues to share a passion for art. Nancy is survived by children Anne Wallace Morris of Houston and David Wallace and wife Laura of San Antonio; as well as Grandchildren James Morris, Annie Morris Lunn and husband Trey, Claire Morris, Emma Morris, Julia Wallace and Lillian Wallace.
She will be buried at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery with her late husband. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Wellesley College, the San Antonio Art Museum, the McNay Art Museum or the
charity of your choice.
A private family burial will be held February 10th followed by a reception for family and friends at the San Antonio Country Club from 4:00 - 6:00.
