Jack Hebdon Obituary

January 9, 1923 - February 12, 2016
Jack Caldwell Hebdon went home to his Lord and Savior on February 12, 2016 after 93 incredible years. Jack was born on January 9, 1923 in San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Anne Schuchard Hebdon; his parents, Horace and Virgie Hebdon and his sister Loraine Paschal.

He was well liked by many and discovered his love for public speaking in high school as president of the Student Council. He attended the University of Texas where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and later became the chapter president. Jack was named outstanding student in 1944, and was also a member of the Cowboys and Friar Society. He graduated in 1944 from the UT Law School with a JD degree and began practicing trial law in San Antonio. He helped build the law firm Groce, Locke and Hebdon from 3 attorneys to nearly 100, the largest in San Antonio. He was an active part of the firm for over 60 years.

In the courtroom he represented some of the largest fortune 500 companies in the United States. He was well respected and regarded by the legal community, and during his career he held many positions in various organizations such as; President of the San Antonio Bar association, Founding Member and President of the Texas Association of Defense Council, Vice President of the State Bar Association, and State Chairman of The American College of Trial lawyers. He was also Past Chairman of the Texas Bar Foundation and in 2014 was honored for serving 70 years as an attorney. Jack was only 21 years old when he tried his first case.

Jack was involved with the Episcopal Church for most of his life. As a member of St. Mark's Church he served as Senior Warden more times than he could remember. He also served as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas for 42 years, making him the longest tenured Chancellor in the United States. He was elected Deputy to 9 different General Conventions of the National Episcopal Church and served on numerous national church committees.

He was a member and President of The Order of the Alamo, Texas Cavaliers, German Club of San Antonio, San Antonio Country Club, and The Canopus Club. The Texas Cavaliers recently honored him for being a member for over 70 years, the longest in their history. Jack was also a member of the Board of Directors for C.H. Guenther & Son (Pioneer Flours Mill) for over 40 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth West and her husband, Mitch and son Jack Hebdon, Jr. and his wife, Carol. His granddaughters, Brooke Terrell (Rigdon), Kathrine Cassidy (Tom), Hannah Beever (Charles), Elizabeth Reblin (Eric), and Anne Mueller (Gates), and his 10 great grandchildren. The family extends their sincerest gratitude for the outstanding care provided by Bea Rodriguez, Clara Winfield, and Laura Hernandez, his faithful care-givers over the last several years. They would also like to thank the wonderful staff at North East Baptist Hospital who made his last 24 hours with us peaceful.

He will be remembered and celebrated on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2016 at ST. MARK'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH 315 WEST PECAN AT 11:00 A.M. Honorary Pallbearer will be the former Past President of the Order of the Alamo. Donations can be made to St. Marks Church, The Texas Cavalier Charitable Foundation or the charity of your choice.
