R. Ayers Obituary

December 15, 1947 - September 27, 2017
Judge R. Glen Ayers, Jr., "a force of nature in a bow tie", passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Horry County, South Carolina on December 15, 1947. Glen graduated from Clemson University in 1969, received a Master's degree from the University of North Carolina in 1971, served in the U.S. Army from 1971-72 and graduated summa cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1975. He received his LL.M. from Harvard Law School in 1979.

Glen's early legal career took him to Dallas; San Antonio; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Oxford, Mississippi, then in 1981, Glen and Jan returned to San Antonio where Glen served on the faculty of St. Mary's University School of Law. He served as Chief U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Texas from 1985-1988. After working for a national law firm in Washington, D.C., Glen returned to San Antonio and joined the bankruptcy practice of Langley & Banack in 1996.

Glen was named one of the Best Lawyers in America in Bankruptcy Litigation from 1995 to the present, as well as a Texas Super Lawyer from 2003 to the present. He received the San Antonio Business Journal's Outstanding Lawyer Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, in recognition of his tremendous impact on the San Antonio legal community.

Glen leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Jan, his son Roderick III, his daughter Claudia and her husband George, granddaughter Ellie and many family members and friends from South Carolina, Texas, DC and beyond.

Glen was an avid supporter of Clemson University athletics and proudly wore orange to support his team. Glen and Jan enjoyed traveling nationally and internationally, as well as spending time at their condo in Port Aransas. He was a voracious reader and history buff and enjoyed sharing his many stories. Glen's greatest joy came from being PaPa to his granddaughter Ellie. Glen's impact will be felt for many years to come through the countless people he touched as a judge, attorney, and friend.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, October 2nd from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the offices of Langley & Banack, 745 E. Mulberry, 9 FL. The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 3rd at 4:00 p.m. at University Presbyterian Church, 300 Bushnell Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to United Way.

I worked with The Judge (as he preferred to be called) at V&E in DC in the early to mid 1990s. To say he was a colorful character would be a woeful understatement. At the same time, he was a good man with a big heart and always had time to share an amusing story and a smile. Very sorry to hear of his passing. RIP, Judge Ayers, and deepest condolences to your family.

Glen had more positive impact on me as a student at St. Mary's Law School, than any other professor. I regret not keeping in touch with him more, and letting him know how much I learned from him, not just about law, but about life. We had great parties at his and Jan's house during law school, and I have only fond memories of Glen. Bryan Bruner

My heartfelt condolences to Jan and the rest of Glen's family. He was one of my favorite professors at St. Mary's University School of Law and I think I took every course he taught. Glen helped me get a clerkship with the Oppenheimer Firm and I was pleased when he was appointed Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District. I know I speak for a lot of his former students when I say how much we will miss him.

I will miss his big smile as well as his many stories, whether dealing with the law, hunting, or politics.

Our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the Honorable R. Glen Ayers during this difficult time. He was our beloved Chief Judge at the start of our careers at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court from 1985 1988. We were blessed to serve at his pleasure and to be regarded fondly by him all of these years. We're certain he will rest in peace and experience the eternal glory of God's Kingdom.
