Samuel Friedberg Obituary

FRIEDBERG
Samuel J. Friedberg, MD, died after a difficult illness on October 15, 2013, at the age of 86. He was born in New York City on October 2, 1927. Dr. Friedberg spent a portion of his childhood in Antwerp, where his father was a tobacco importer, until his family returned to the United States in 1939, as Nazism rose in Europe. As a youth, he lived in Atlantic City, New Jersey. There, in eighth grade, he met Ruth Crane, whom he married ten years later in 1949. After earning his undergraduate degree from Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Friedberg's medical residency was interrupted when the Navy called him to military service in 1954. After serving his country, he completed his residency at Duke University Medical Center in NC, where his work was guided by Dr. Eugene Stead, a leading figure in mid-20th century medical education. Dr. Friedberg remained at Duke for another 10 years as an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Cooperative Lipid Laboratory for the Veterans Administration Cooperative Studies in Atherosclerosis. In 1968, Dr. Friedberg and his family moved to San Antonio, where he was one of the founding faculty members of the University of Texas Health Science Center, until he retired in 1992. He also headed the UT Health Science Center's Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism from 1968 - 1975. He authored or co-authored more than 40 papers, many concerning glycerol ethers and lipids, and some of his work is still referenced in important biochemistry texts. In 1992 Dr. Friedberg began a second career as an artist, working primarily in water colors. His excellent drawing skills and feel for gesture gave his paintings great warmth. He also earned a pilot's license and flew single-engine aircraft for many years, which gave him great pleasure. Most of all, he was a loving and devoted husband, father, "Grampy," friend, and music lover. He shared his broad knowledge of classical music by writing program notes for the San Antonio Chamber Music Society for many years, and he was a constant, strong supporter of the classical music activities of his wife. Dr. Friedberg is preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Bayer and survived by his wife Ruth, son Dr. Michael Friedberg, daughter Jean, daughter-in-law Barbara, and grandsons John and Joseph. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Ruth, I was in a flying club with Sam. As mentioned in the obit he was an avid pilot and would jump at the chance to fly. Always up on the latest aviation technology. Sam was a good friend and pilot (known to our group as the "Test Pilot") May God rest his soul in peace.

Dear Ruth,

Oh my dear friend. Sending caring thoughts, prayers and love. You are both such an important, compassionate, wise and humorous source of memories from my San Antonio days. While he may be in a better place, those of us left behind will miss him terribly.

I am very sorry for your loss. I have never met Dr. Friedberg, but I am also a Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma survivor. Hope you receive all the courage and strength at this time.
