Erwin Remmert Obituary

REMMERT

Erwin Adolph Remmert, LTC, USAF (Ret), 92, passed peacefully from this life surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, October 2nd, 2010. Erwin was affectionately known to his large family as "Papaw". Erwin was born near Brenham, Texas on August 22nd, 1918 to Elsie Beerwinkle Remmert and Edwin Henry Remmert. He is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 63 years, Bobbie Jean Remmert, his son, Travy Hillman Remmert, and his brother, Edwin Henry Remmert, Jr. Papaw is survived by his son, Pete Remmert, and his wife, Christine, of San Antonio; his daughter, Melissa, and her husband, Robert Wittman, of San Antonio; his son, Fred Remmert, and his wife, Tracy, of Austin; and his daughter-in-law, Cheryl Remmert, of Boerne. His adoring grand and great grandchildren are Camille DiMaio and husband, Rob, and their children, Claire, Gina, Mary Theresa, and Vincent, of San Antonio; Paul Remmert and wife, Sarah, and their children, Ashley and Corey, of San Antonio; Cathy Remmert of New York City; Gracie and James Wittman of San Antonio; Tyler, Chloe and Audrey Remmert of Boerne; and Sam, Lily and Noah Remmert of Austin. Papaw is also survived by his sister Lucille and her husband Burke Martin, of San Antonio, and numerous nieces and nephews and lifelong friends. He was a very proud and loving patriarch admired by everyone, and he will be greatly missed. Lt. Col. Remmert felt privileged and honored to serve his country in the United States Army Air Corps, and later in the U.S. Air Force. His flight training was at Randolph AFB, and his first duty station was Goodfellow Field in San Angelo, Texas. His tours of duty included Brazil, Japan, Libya, Washington, D.C. and many other places. He was a flight instructor who taught countless cadets. Later in his Air Force career he served in the Airways and Air Communications Service, AACS. His numerous accomplishments went far beyond his time in the Air Force. After he retired from the USAF in 1962, Erwin and Bobbie Jean settled in San Antonio, Texas. He worked for nearly twenty years at San Antonio Savings Association as a Mortgage Loan Officer and then as Vice President in the Mortgage Loan Department. He also took pride in teaching two of his sons and a daughter-in-law how to fly and enjoyed continuing to instruct numerous student pilots in gliders. We'd like to express our thanks to those who lovingly cared for Papaw at Independence Hill Retirement Community and Assisted Living. "GET 'EM IN THE BLUE", PAPAW!
