Jack Stephens Obituary

October 8, 1941 - January 25, 2015
Jack Oliver Stephens II passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015, in San Antonio, Texas. Jack was born on October 8, 1941 in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Charles William Stephens Sr and Margaret Anne Adney Stephens.

Jack went to high school at Little Rock Central and graduated high school from Dardanelle, Arkansas. After 2 years in the U.S. Army he served in U.S. Marine Corps for 4 years. Semper fi! Next he pursued a B.A. at University of Arkansas while working at Johnson and Johnson.

Jack's step-dad advised him, "Son, you can make more money by accident in Texas than you can make on purpose in Arkansas." So Jack moved his family to Texas. Eventually Jack ended up in San Antonio in 1989. Jack re-invented himself many times: manager of a tomato coop, owner of an oilfield services company, financial planner, professional career coach, and motivational speaker.

Jack is a huge Razorback Hog fan and enjoyed the recent Arkansas vs Texas game at the Texas Bowl. He served as a deacon, elder, teacher, camp counselor, and president of his HOA. He served in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) leadership, on church mission boards, and many other leadership positions.

Jack was a father and mentor to many throughout his Christian life. He set the benchmark for others to follow, and he never gave up on anyone. Jack was known for his words of wisdom, encouragement, and sense of humor. One of Jack's favorite quotes: "If I can change your tape, I can change your LIFE!"

Jack was a master at chewing you out and encouraging you at the same time. Then you thanked him for it afterwards. He was also father to his granddaughter Britney for 7 years, one of his fondest memories.

Jack is survived by his wife Gloria of 26 years, sons Jack O Stephens III (wife Liz), Curtis Stephens, Jason Langford, Scott Piusz (wife Sunny and son Lucas); daughters Jacquelyn Monique Obenchain and Shelli Schmalle (husband Loren); grandchildren Britney Stephens, Jag Michael Stephens, Donnie Ray Stephens, Jacob Stephens, Maggie Stephens, Paige Schmalle, Brooke Schmalle; two brothers Charles (Porkey) Stephens (wife Gay) and Bob (Catfish) Stephens, niece Tara Sue Halla (husband Bunge), sister-in-law Joy Farve (husband Ron), brother-in-law Gary Bloomer (wife Linda) and countless other "adopted" kids who knew him as Papa Jack.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to one or more of the following charities that meant a great deal to Jack: Camp Tejas (http://www.camptejas.org/donate), Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) International (http://www.bsfinternational.org/

Jack you have been a great mentor and friend. You know God has a sense of humor if he put us together. Your passion and unapologetic example of Christ in your life is bar that I have set for myself but have a long way to go. Your confidence and wisdom is second to none and it was my privilege to have met you. I look forward to seeing you again someday. And if you get posted at the gates to heaven you'd better not be playin'- Semper Fi

Gloria and family,

What a life lived! I met you and Jack through our time spent at Camp Tejas. They should have renamed the "Golden Plunger Award" to the Mr.Jack Award! He always had his boy's cabin looking military style. He had such an impact on those boys that came through Camp Tejas.

God Bless,
Ronnie and Susan Covarrubia

Jack impacted not only myself but my 9year old daughter. He showed my daughter a passion for Christ and was a loyal face every Sunday at Grace Point. We had the honor of Jack and Gloria baptizing my daughter. I never told him I appreciated his service or how much he really made a spiritual impact in my family's life . I took for granted he would be there every Sunday. Jack Thank You .

Jack enriched our lives through his encouraging words and attitudes. His years of being our son's cabin leader made Camp Tejas even more memorable and special than it already was. He made such an impact on our son the he requested Mr. Jack be the one to baptize him. We will miss him greatly and look forward to the day we will see him again. We know without a doubt that he is laughing and talking up a storm in heaven right now!

I worked with Jack and Gloria in the Grace Point Children's Ministry for over 12 years as a Shepherd. Jack had a love of God and a love for teaching that was unsurpassed. Coming from a military background myself, I know the importance of discipline and showing love at the same time. Jack exhibited strength and firmness where needed and showed love and compassion at all times. Grace Point will not be the same without him walking the halls of the Children's building. His spirit will be with us forever. Jack epitomized 2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith". Our thoughts and prayers are with Gloria and his family. May God give you rest Jack. Another Soldier of the Cross has gone home.
