Joe Scates Obituary

SCATES
Joe Lonny Scates, age 82, passed away May 7, 2011 in Lewisville, Texas. He was born in Duncan, OK to Elmer Scates and Valera Brigance Scates on May 2, 1929. After moving to California as a teen, Joe played football and graduated from Modesto (California) High School. He served in the United States Air Force from 1947 to 1968, primarily as a pilot, reaching the rank of Major. After retiring from the service, Joe returned to San Antonio to try his hand in several business ventures. From an import gift shop to carpet sales to real estate appraising, his own mark of success was meeting people and making friends. The only real love of his life after flying was producing country music and the challenge of promoting the artists he came to care about as family. Joe moved to the Dallas area to be near family in 2009. He is survived by his two sons: Mark Owen Scates of Nassau Bay TX and John Eric Scates (Denni Kay) of Carrollton TX, three grandchildren: Christopher Keith Scates of Springfield VA, Brian Paul Scates of Dallas TX, Melissa Kay Scates Koslan (Brian) of Carrollton TX, great-grandson: Braeden Kui Scates, two brothers: Patrick Scates of Valley Springs CA and Michael Scates (Carolyn) of Grove OK, and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service with full military honors will be Friday, May 20, 2011, 10:30 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Homewood Residence of Castle Hills in San Antonio and the Sterling House of Lewisville. Joe was happy and content in your care. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Commemorative Air Force Museum of Texas or the USO.

Dear Scates Family:

Please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of your beloved. There are never any right words to express how deeply sad I am for the pain your family is enduring at this difficult time.

As Chair of the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs and Military Installations, I am sincerely thankful for his valiant service in defense of our rights and freedom.

His commitment to family, friends, our community, and to serving our great nation leaves a wonderful legacy. May the love and the wonderful memories you shared with him help you when you need it most. He will never be forgotten, and your family will be remembered in my prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. My mother-in-law worked for Mr. Scates at the carpet shop, and our family grew very fond of him. Later, my husband and I would always enjoy visiting with him when we would see him around town.

My prayers are with his family. I remember Joe because I worked at the Record Mfg. Co. where we made his records. He was always very nice and very respectful. He was a joy to help with his orders. May he rest in peace.
