Rose Trevino Obituary

TREVIÑO
Rose Violet
Zertuche Treviño
Rose Violet Zertuche Treviño was born on December, 17 1951 in San Antonio, TX and passed away on April 30, 2010. She was the oldest of five children to Tony and Mary Zertuche. She was the first in her family to graduate from college and to earn a masters degree. As a librarian she became San Antonio's first Hispanic branch manager at Memorial Library, created the Nation's first bilingual Born to Read program, became a member of the Bluebonnet committee, became first a member and then chair of the Newbery committee. In 1970 she graduated from Providence High School and in 1974 she graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University where she later earned her Master's degree in Library Science. In 1975 she started her 35 year career as a children's librarian and her marriage to her husband of 35 years Pete Treviño. For 28 years she worked at the San Antonio Public Library and for the last seven years she worked at the Houston Public Library. For her, being a children's librarian was not work, but what she loved to do. She received numerous awards including the prestigious Siddie Jo Johnson award and just recently a special award for her contributions to the 2X2 committee. She was an active member of the Texas Library Association, American Library Association, Association for Library Service to Children, Public Library Association, and REFORMA the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services for Latinos and the Spanish Speaking. The highlight of her career was presenting the Newbery Award to Neil Gaiman at the American Library Association's awards banquet in Chicago, IL. Presenting at the banquet was special to her because her family was there to share in her moment. She loved to read and share her passion for reading to children, which is why it is fitting that she passed away on El día de los niños/El día de los libros, a national day to celebrate children and books in Mexico. She contributed time reading to children at the Children's Shelter of San Antonio when ever she could. The Trevino family will be making a donation of books in Rose's memory to the Children's Shelter of San Antonio. She is survived by her husband: Pete Treviño, children: Steven Treviño; Jaclyn Treviño Rendon; and their respective spouses Vicky Valdez Treviño and David Rendon, parents: Tony Zertuche; Mary Zertuche, siblings: Darlene Zertuche Leyton; Yvonne Zertuche; Sonia Zertuche Miller; and John Zertuche; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. Condolences may be sent to the Trevino family at 10503 Burr Oak, San Antonio, TX 78230.

Pete, my prayers will be with you and your family. I never had the opportunity to meet your wife, Rose, but from the way you talked about her, she must have been a wonderful wife, mother and companion.

In these darkest of days, all we have left are the wonderful memories we have shared with our loved one, but just remember, at the end of the Rainbow, we will all be reunited once again.

Rose was an inspiration and a pioneer of true cultural exchange. The first time I had the opportunity to work with her in San Antonio, I took three pages of notes on award-winning programs she had developed that brought literacy, love of reading and love of learning in all disciplines to all families and children across the city. The programs she designed for Hispanic families have stood the test of time and are models replicated in programs across the country. Her vision and big heart certainly changed the world of libraries, making it richer and more relevant for all. Her love of her family and her commitment to community improvement were always apparent and were the foundation of the large legacy she leaves behind.

I had the honor of working with Rose during the ALA Youth Media Awards and appreciated her professionalism and commitment to literacy. She was an invaluable member of the library community, and efforts to support bilingual literacy in our nation's libraries.

Please accept my condolences and know that she will be greatly missed.

Rose was a beautiful person inside and out and will be missed. She was a sweet cousin whom I was so proud of. When visiting the main library with my son, she always made time to come by and encourage my son to read and was happy to share books with him, when he was a tot & through the years. He is an avid reader to this day. She left a marked impression on his life as well as mine. Blessings and comfort to her beautiful family.

Rose's death has affected me...maybe because she was only 3 months younger than I. As I read the entries, it becomes obvious she touched many people! Her disposition may have been outwardly shy and quiet, but there was a strong drive and spirit within...otherwise how could she have made such a difference to many? My prayer is with Uncle Tony, Aunt Mary, my cousins, and of course Pete and Rose's children and their spouses! God bless you, and may Rose pray for all of us as she is now with our gracious God!

I worked at a small library in the middle of a low income area where no one of importance ever visited but Rose, the Head of Children’s Services, came more than once. Everything she did was out of compassion for all children and I would have followed her anywhere. My greatest hope is that she knew how much I loved and admired her.

Rose contributed to Youth Services librarianship on local, state and national levels. Her recent publication of Pura Belpré Awards: Celebrating Latino Authors and Illustrators is an example of the professionalism Rose brought to all her endeavors. Her efforts on behalf of the IMLS Fountain of Youth Project designed to build a strong team of Youth Services librarians have impacted the lives of a dozen current staff. Her memory and legacy lives as each of these new librarians conduct storytimes, babytimes, and place a book into the hands of a child.

My deepest sympathy to her family and friends.
Respectfully,
Mary Wagoner

Dear Treviño family,

I attended PHS with Rose, and I saw her at OLLU a few times, while studying for my Masters Degree. She was always so quiet, shy, and soft spoken. She had a friendly smile, cute giggle, and a great personality. It was a joy to have her as a friend and a classmate. From what I've read, it seems like she remained the same as an adult.

I can imagine what a great wife and mother she was to you! She left an impressing legacy.

May the Lord grant you the strength and courage to get through this great loss in your lives. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

May the Lord richly bless you, and grant you peace.

I was so saddened to hear of Rose's passing. I have wonderful memories of Rose when she first started her career as a Children's Librarian at the Las Palmas Branch Library of SAPL. Little did I know what an impact she would make in the library world. As our Children's Librarian, she was instrumental in bringing new and creative ideas to all our children's programs. We remained good friends and continued our friendship through the years. Rose was a kind, loving, gentle soul with deep spiritual values. I will miss her greatly. My love and prayers go out to her husband, Pete, her children, Steven and Jaclyn, and her family.
