Sam Womble Obituary

WOMBLE
Samuel Marion Womble, 58, our hero and our inspiration, passed through the gates of heaven on Thursday, August 13, 2009 surrounded by his loving family at North Central Baptist Hospital in San Antonio after a nine-year battle with multiple myeloma. He was born to Samuel Allen (S.A.) and Eva Daniell Womble on December 12, 1950 in Mercedes, Texas. Sam was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Cuero, Texas. Sam grew up in the Rio Grande Valley and excelled in sports and academics. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved to travel and being surrounded by family. He graduated from Edcouch-Elsa High School in 1969. Sam graduated with a B.S. degree in Agriculture Education from Texas A & I University in Kingsville where he also met and married Shirley Grant in 1972. He later received a Masters' Degree from Southwest Texas State University. Together they went on to raise three wonderful children. Sam was a Vocational Agriculture Science Teacher for 31 years in McAllen, Santa Rosa, James Madison High School, Stroman High School and Smithson Valley High School in Comal County. He also received recognition and many awards for his work in the Vocational Agriculture field. He was involved with the San Antonio Livestock Show where he was a ringman for the auction. He was called on to judge numerous county shows, some as recently as January 2009. In 2006, Sam was honored by having the Smithson Valley Animal Project Facility named after him. In the last four years, Sam raised show steers for youngsters and enjoyed seeing their faces light up when they got to pick their show animals. He was also occupied with writing a book about his life which he recently completed. Sam is survived by his loving and encouraging wife of 37 years, Shirley; his mother, Eva Womble of LaVilla; his children Sam and his wife, Sarah Womble of Victoria, Valerie and her husband, Jason Vick of Jourdanton, and Adam Womble of Victoria. PaPa adored his four grandchildren: Mason Allen Vick, Madilyn Grace Vick, Connor Nolan Womble, and Savana Marie Womble. Sam is also survived by two brothers, Dan A. Womble of Lockhart and David Womble of La Villa; and one sister, Suzanne and her husband, Keith Richardson of Victoria and many loving and supportive nieces and nephews who were so proud of their Uncle Sam. Sam is preceded in death by his father, S. A. Womble of La Villa and sister-in-law, Judith Womble, of Edcouch. Visitation will be Sunday, August 16 from 5-7 p.m. at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, Texas. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 17 at 2:00 P.M. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Huebner off Stone Oak Parkway in San Antonio with Monsignor Douglas Fater officiating. Burial will be held Tuesday, August 18 at 10:00 a.m. at the Womble Family Cemetery near the intersection of FM 1015 and FM 1925 north of Edcouch, Texas. Deacon Harold Parker will preside. Pallbearers are Johnny Pospech, Darrell Schmidt, Robbie Broyles, Gerald Harris, Rolando Gonzalez, Ronnie Urbanczyk, Ronnie Steubing, Les Deuel, Joe Taylor, and Dr. Kenny Patin. Sam was very close to his dialysis family in Cuero and in San Antonio and to all the doctors and nurses who cared for him with such compassion over the years. A scholarship fund has been organized in Sam Womble's memory to recognize outstanding Smithson Valley FFA youth. Contributions will be managed through Wells Fargo Bank, 307 N. I was an A&I classmate with Sam. We did our student teaching together at Mathis Texas.

We are sorry for your loss. God´s power is all encompassing and can often bring joy and pain at the same time. Joy in knowing your parents are together with God but at the same time the passing brings awareness to each some level of pain in handling the grief of the passing development in looking to God for continued strength in going forward as the future has only one direction. God provides that direction but does not say it is easy. May your family find peacefulness in the passing.

Both myself and my husband feel extremely blessed for having had Mr. Womble as a teacher and mentor. He was an amazing man and he will be missed by the many lives that he touched.

August 24, 2009

When I first met Sam at A&I, I thought he would be the one I would like to have on my side in a tough spot. We enerted college together and were classmates for several years. As times have it, you lose contact with classmates after graduation. Then as my daughter entered into the workforce with A&M extension, she became good friends with Sarah and Sam Womble. I have kept up with the family thru their relationship. Our prayers were with him and the family throughout the struggles. They continue to be with the family. Sam was a fantastic person. Please tell the grandchildren during their years. Love, hope, joy, and peace with you.

All the Monte Alto folks and the McAllen FFA kids ( of which I was a member of each many many moons ago) remember Mr. Womble fondly. He was as good as they come and a role model for many of us. IN a word, I would decribe him as DEDICATED.

-- Up to his final days, i never lived down the name " double trouble ". He often said, i know what double trouble means, i have one of my own; referring to his daughter Valarie.
Many people knew Mr.Womble as the man with the thick glasses, or, our old ag teacher. Most of us knew him as a beautiful man inside and out. I will always remember him as the man who truly believed in never giving up too soon. He stuck to his word & fought 8 hard years.
No matter how bad the pain was, he never once gave up on any of us kids. even if he had to sit in the car all day, he was at most of our shows, he even went to dialisis in Houston, then made his way over to the stock show, supporting us kids!
I was a stubborn little girl, but from the very first time i showed, until my last show with Mr.Womble, he ws the only one i would ever listen to. He would tell me every year, " Double Trouble, you see that # 3 on your show halter, if you hold his head up high, ill give you $3.00 " And no ,atter how goor, or bad i did, as soon as i stepped out of the show ring, his first words were, " Double Trouble, you did a good job holding his head up and showing him " Those were always his words to me, up until our last show together!
Mr.Womble was truly an inspirational man.
I will never forget his storie of when he met Shirley. He would always say, " it was love at first site, i just fell inlove with her long blonde hair ". For a hard, 8 long years of fighting dialsis,Shirley was always by his side, no matter what. You two were truly an inspiration o me, and always will be!

Mr. Womble, you will never be forgotten. You changed many peoples put look on life, including my own!

--- My momma always told me, " you never know what you miss, until its gone ", but this is one man, i knew i would miss, before he was gone!

love you!

love always. Double Trouble

We are so saddened to hear of the loss of Mr. Womble. We met him only a few times at the San Antonio Shows and enjoyed his vast knowledge of cattle. We will remember him from the wonderful way his son Sam and his daughter-in-law Sarah spoke of him. He's left many stories to share with their children. His greatest tribute is his love for his wife, children and grandchildren. What a wonderful legacy to leave.

Mr Womble was such a role model to me through his quiet persistence to see me be my best as a student at Smithson Valley back in the late 90's. I was deeply saddened when I heard of Mr Womble's passing. Mr. Womble instilled in me the love of agriculture when I was in 8th grade. I had just moved to Smithson Valley and didnt know anyone, but his class gave me something to look forward to and I continued taking Ag classes all through high school. He taught me so much about the outdoors and animals and hard work. He even taught me how to shoot! The impact he left on me and I'm sure the many students he taught will carry on throughout my life.

Thank you for everything you helped me accomplish. The world needs more Sam Wombles. You will be dearly missed.

I was so saddened to learn of Sam's passing. Anytime I saw Sam it brought images of my brother to mind. I can remember seeing the 2 of them together at the livestock shows during the years my brother was an ag teacher down here. No doubt there would be laughter coming from the both of them. To understand the positve impact Sam had on those around him, you needn't know him but for a brief moment. He truely left a positive and endearing footprint on this earth. Remember.....if you look upward through teardrops, you see rainbows.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Womble Family for the loss of Sammy. I knew him from the second grade at Monte Alto clear thru High school at Edcouch Elsa. We were also in 4-H together. He was a very good friend. By reading his obit he lived a short life but sure had alot of accomplishments thru the years. The family had to have been very proud of him.

I was lucky to have known Mr Womble. Even though I was not in his FFA program he helped me with my show steers many many times. I could not even begin to gues the number of lives Mr Womble must have touched. But whatever that number is im betting that it is several digits long. Simply put the world would be a better place with more people like Mr. Womble in it. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Womble Family.

"The making of friends, who are real friends, is the best token we have of a man's success in life."
- Edward Everett Hale (American writer 1822-1909)

As a fellow student at Edcouch-Elsa High School, I always made it a point to sit as near Sammy as possible in math class, especially Algebra II. He took care of me and helped me understand. He was an excellent teacher even then, and a kind and patient friend. I probably would still be sitting in that desk in Mr. Shull’s class were it not for Sammy! Thank goodness for him!

More than that, Sammy was a good and decent boy who became a fine and generous man. He has legions of folks throughout his lifetime who were honored to call him a friend. I am one of those from long, long ago.

To his dear family, it must be magnificent to be related to someone who has touched so many lives in such positive ways. I know you will miss him desperately. May you find peace that passes understanding.

August 17, 2009

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Womble family during this difficult time. Sam will be remembered as a great individual who left a remarkable legacy. Sam was a great friend, classmate, and will be missed by the entire E-E Class of '69 and his former football teammates.

I am so privileged to be one of Mr. Womble's former Ag students at Smithson Valley. He was a wonderful man who would do anything for anyone. He is one of the reasons I majored in Ag Ed in college. I have so many fond memories of Mr Womble from judging contest , State Convention in Corpus and my very first state convention when Mr. Womble drove 13 students in a 15 passenger van by himself to Amarillo. What a brave man! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family as we lose a trully amazing man.

Amanda (Owens) Miller

August 17, 2009

I was saddened to hear of Mr. Womble's passing. In my years at Smithson Valley, Mr. Womble was both an inspiration and a motivation to us students. I learned a lot about agriculture and production from him, but it was his love of the outdoors that inspired my current career. I am a wildlife biologist due to Mr. Womble's enthusiam for the outdoors. He never let me use power tools, but he gave me intangible tools to succeed in life.
The world has lost a great man, but heaven has gained an angel.

To the Womble family: Our hearts were so sad to hear about Mr. Womble. You have our deepest sympathy during this difficult time. Mr. Womble was such a kind and generous man. He always had a kind word or praise to our dialysis teammates and to his fellow dialysis members, even when he was so weak and exhausted from chemo and dialysis. He was a fighter, he said he would not give in or give up and he never did. He will be missed greatly by us all. He was an inspiration to everyone he met. I've never had such a patient who would put himself last. He made the world better just by being in it. It has been a great pleasure to know he and Mrs. Womble. Our team is going to release balloons to honor Mr. Womble on Tuesday. Mrs. Womble you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Womble Family,
My heart hurts for you as you grieve your loss but I cannot help but laugh when I think about how much fun Sammy used to have teasing me when Suzanne and I were together. I know that is what big brothers do to their sisters and their girlfriends and I am glad to say that those are the memories I will recount when I think of him.
Bubba and I will keep you all in our prayers and hope that your tears will soon be only smiles when he is remembered.

I just heard the bad news from John Galloway and I am so sad. It is too late to try to get to San Antonio today but know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. He is in a better place, I am sure of that! Let me know if there is anything I can do to help in any way.
Again, my sympathy to your entire family.

Mr. Womble was my Ag teacher at McAllen High School during my senior year of 1976. I so enjoyed his class and he helped me so much with raising my pig "Herbie". He was such a delight and had a great sense of humor. I have often wondered where he was and what he was up to. As I read his obituary I see that he went on to bigger and better things and was so involved. It doesn't surprise me as he was such a great guy! He is missed by more folks than you realize as he touched so many over the years. My sincerest condolences to his family and may God sustain you through this sad time.

Mr. Womble was such an inspiration to all those he shared his life with. He certainly will be missed and his life will be honored through the many great experiences he left behind. This is what i will never forget and his teachings and attitude shall remain with me always.

As any of us who have ever attended any kind of school during our time, we know there's always some educators and mentors who will, by simply being themselves, stand out from the rest. Mr. Womble was one of those that has touched the lives of not only his many students, but anyone who was ever blessed with his presence in their lives. I was a student of Mr. Womble's F.F.A. Ag Class for only two years while he taught at James Madison High School but I got to know him well enough to give testimony of how much of a positive influence he was in helping most all of his students to work hard and become the successful people they are now. He was humble, but any of us who knew him already consider him a true-to-life legend.
