Jeremy Henwood Obituary

HENWOOD
Officer Jeremy Nicholas Henwood, Captain (Major Select) USMC was born in Ottawa, Ontario Canada on September 14, 1974 to Dr. Robbie Wayne and Dr. Beverely Lou Henwood. He lived in Kanata, Ottawa, and in 1976 moved to Saskatoon. In 1978 the family moved to Texas while Jeremy's father pursued his career in drug research and earned his Ph. D. The family grew with the birth of his siblings Robbie Douglas and Emily Dawn. Jeremy's father eventually chose dental school in San Antonio instead of returning to Canada. The Henwood family remained in Texas and Jeremy grew up in San Antonio which he considered home. Jeremy attended Marshall High School in San Antonio and then at 15 years old entered the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas, where he played football and basketball. In 1995 after graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Jeremy completed basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and returned to San Antonio to attend the University of Texas where he received his Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Criminal Justice. Jeremy became a United States Citizen so as to become an Officer in the United States Marine Corps. After college Jeremy pursued his Marine Corps career. Upon completion of Officer Candidate School Jeremy was commissioned on December 15, 2000. He then attended The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia. He proudly served his country which included three overseas deployments. His first, for 1 ½ years with the 7th Engineer Support Battalion Camp Pendleton 1st Force Service Group, was to Iraq for Operation Enduring Freedom which evolved into Operation Iraqi Freedom. His 2nd deployment to Iraq followed shortly thereafter where he served for another year. Jeremy left active duty, re-entered the reserves and joined the San Diego Police Department July 20, 2007. After graduating from the 73rd San Diego Regional Academy and completing phase training Jeremy was assigned to Mid City Division. Jeremy had a deep sense of honor, integrity and commitment to both his duties as a Police Officer and a Marine and proudly lived by the U. S. Marine Corp motto Semper Fidelis - "Always Faithful." In August 2010, Marine duty called again and Jeremy was deployed to Afghanistan with the Combat Logistics Regiment 2 as a Bravo Company Commander for Combat Logistics Battalion 2. He fulfilled his tour in Afghanistan and returned to the 4th Marine Logistics Group Forward West Camp Pendleton where he continued to serve active duty including service in Costa Rica, until the conclusion of his orders. Jeremy returned to San Diego and his police department career in February 2011. On August 6, 2011, at approximately 5:30 p.m. Jeremy was on patrol in the area around 45th Street and University Avenue when a car flashing its lights approached him from behind. When Jeremy pulled to the curb to assist, the driver produced a shotgun and shot him without warning. The suspect had been involved in another unprovoked shooting in the neighboring City of El Cajon less than a half an hour prior. An "all units" broadcast of that shooting was being given to SDPD but the suspect shot Jeremy before he could be made aware of the earlier incident, vehicle or suspect description. A witness and good Samaritan stopped to render aid, using the police radio to call for help. Jeremy was rushed to Mercy Hospital where he died shortly after 1 a.m., August 7, 2011. Even in death, Jeremy proved his commitment to help others through his choice of being an organ donor. Jeremy is lovingly remembered by his family, friends, coworkers and Marine comrades as larger than life, "a 6' 3" Boy Scout", a humanitarian and a man of honor who loved outdoor activities and spending time with his friends and family. Jeremy is survived by his parents Dr.'s Robbie and Beverley Henwood of San Antonio, Texas, younger brother Robbie Douglas Henwood (Mila Yashkova) of Schertz, Texas and younger sister Emily Dawn Henwood (Joshua Shaver) of Ottawa, Canada.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 12, 2011, at 1000 hours, at The Rock Church, 2277 Rosecrans Street, San Diego, CA 92106. The San Diego Police Officers Association has established a trust fund for Officer Henwood's family. Donations can be mailed to:

I want to thank you for your dedicated service to this great nation and to the community of San Diego California. I did not know you personally but being a Police Officer here in Texas and being a reserve in the Army I understand your commitment and integrity. My daughter now attends Marshall high school and I attend UTSA. I promise that you will never be forgotten. I will always remember the sacrifices you have made and by making the ultimate sacrifice. I pray for your family, friends and coworkers who I know will forever miss you. May you RIP and may your family find the courage to keep going strong.

To the Henwood family, I was aware of Jeremy's final act of kindness right before he was taken. He sounded like an amazing young man, who anyone would be honored to know. On this Thanksgiving, I give thanks to God for people like Jeremy. True heroes who love and serve their country with honor. I am very sorry for your loss. God bless you.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Jeremy was my friend and colleague here at SDPD. It took me almost 2 wks before I could stomach to watch the video from McDonalds and, as I'm sure many did, I broke down in tears for the sadness and pain of knowing what was to follow in the minutes after. To the Henwood family, there are not words enough to say how very sorry I am. Everyone, the chiefs, chaplains, Officers and civilians both on duty and off rushed to be at his side and prayed together at the hospital. We loved your son dearly, he was family to us and his death left a void in our hearts that will always be felt.

To the family; fellow police and military officers that knew this Man and Soldier: It was with great saddness that I read about this incident. I viewed the video where he purchased a meal for a young 13 yr. old because, the youth did not have enough money. This video in itself shows that Officer Henwood was a caring individual, looking out for others. You all have my deepest sympathy. Yet, know, he has only gone home to the Father. Job well done Officer Henwood Sir!, thank you for what you did in the military and on the police force in San Diego. R.I.P. Soldier and Angel of the Almighty God!

His final act of kindness was a reminder to all of us to practice kindness. We all live to make an impression on at least on individual in our lifetime (usually our children). I think Drs. Henwood as his parents did so for him and now he has done so with the young man at McDonalds that day. Thank you for raising a hero.

As a resident of San Diego, CA I was heartbroken to hear of Officer Henwood's passing. The San Diego Police Dept was hit hard with this loss. The passing of your precious brother and son must be unimaginable. I live not too far from where the shooting occurred. I am shocked at his senseless killing and saddened that this young man's life was cut short. Our local news gave this story much air play. I see that it even made national news. His final act of buying that little boy cookies at the McDonald's minutes before his death was so touching. It shows the goodness that dwelled in this man. Rest in peace Officer Henwood. Thank you for protecting the citizens of San Diego and for your service to our country as a soldier. Below is a link of the story that aired tonight on our local news of the little boy he crossed paths with just before he died. It has left an impression not just on this child, but all the citizens of our city.
