John Colton Obituary

COLTON
John Colton went to be with the Lord, Thursday, September 5, 2013. He was born in Tampa, Florida and settled in San Antonio, TX. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children Steve Colton, Michael May and wife Melanie, Joseph May and wife Stephanie, and Stephen May; grandchildren Ryan May, Rachael May, Richard Colton, Kristy Colton Ahlstrom and Paul Colton and two great-grandchildren; sisters Margie Murray and Susie Randolph and brothers Tim Colton and Carl Jones.

John retired from the 7th Signal Corps, US Army at Ft. Huachuca, AZ, having served two tours in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star along with other military honors. He was an instructor at Ft. Monmouth, NJ and spent eleven years in Europe in Germany and France. As a civilian, John continued to travel the world for various communication contractors. He rode camels in Egypt, walked the Andes foothills, managed a communications upgrade in the Shah's palace in Iran, completed communication projects in Egypt, the Panama Canal, Peru, Saudi Arabia, and other installations across the U.S.

John was a member of First Baptist Church San Antonio, Universal City Bass Club, and Masonic Lodge Navesink No. 9, Red Bank, NJ. He was an avid golfer and hunter, but his passion was fishing, both fresh and salt water, and tinkering with his bass boat. John was a Boy Scout troop leader in Europe and New Mexico. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and taught Hunter's Safety courses while working at the TDRSS site in New Mexico. John was a volunteer with the Arizona Rangers and attended Cochise College.

A Graveside Service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 2:45pm. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia with United States Army Honors at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warriors and/or Fort Sam Houston Fisher House.
