Doyle Gates

GATES
Doyle Edward Gates, age 86 of San Antonio, TX passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in the presence of his loving wife Manda. He was born in Gatesville, TX on August 10, 1927. He graduated from Clifton High School, and joined the US Navy in 1945 and served as a Pharmacist Mate, 3rd Class. In 1947, he married Manda Winifred Brajcich. After his Navy service ended, he attended Texas A&M for a brief time, and then transferred to Humboldt State College in California where he received a degree in Marine Biology. He pursued a lifelong career in marine biology. Early in his career, he worked at the Hunter Foland whaling station in northern California from 1950 to 1951. In 1954, he worked aboard the research vessel NB Schofield at Fields Landing, CA. Later he was the managing director of the Marine Resource Division with the California Department of Fish & Game, where he retired after 20 years of service. He then briefly worked as a lobbyist with the Tuna Research Foundation at Terminal Island, CA, which supported the American tuna industry. He completed his career in Honolulu, HI working for the National Marine Fisheries Service as managing director of the Western Pacific Program Office. He retired from federal service in Hawaii before returning to his beloved Texas. He was active in his faith and held positions on the various parish councils at St. John Vianney in Kailua, HI and St. Mark the Evangelist in San Antonio, TX. He was an avid reader, writer and story teller. He also enjoyed dabbling in art, music and bird watching. Preceding him in death were his mother and father, Sophie and Oscar Gates, Sr.; his brothers, John, Oscar Jr., and Charles. He is survived by his wife Manda; brother Daniel Bain Gates; seven children: Stephen and Barbara Gates of Floresville, TX, Barbara and Joseph Smith of Christchurch, New Zealand, Robert Gates of Midland, TX, Gary and Rae Gates of San Pedro, CA, Susan and Dwayne Clay of Macon, GA, Thomas and Martha Gates of San Pedro, CA, Patrick and Shirley Gates of Honolulu, HI; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
