William A. Reily, Jr. was born on March 18, 1930 in San Antonio, Texas and died on April 27, 2014 in San Antonio. For more than sixty years, Bill was a prominent figure in the art movement known as Post Modernism. After expressing an interest in art at a young age, and with the encouragement of his godmother, Marion Koogler McNay, he received his first formal instruction from Mrs. Mamie Price, an accomplished art teacher trained at the Art Institute of Chicago. Bill then continued his studies under the distinguished Buckley Mac-Gurrin at the San Antonio Art Institute. In 1948 Bill entered the University of Texas at Austin where he would earn his BFA and MFA degrees. Bill Reily's paintings gained national and international exposure with traveling exhibitions throughout Europe (1956-59), that were sponsored by the US Embassy and US Information Services. His prints have not only been shown in Texas but also throughout the United States, including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Oakland Museum of Fine Arts. In 1959 he was recognized as Artist of the Year by the San Antonio Art League, and was the League's recipient of the Onderdonk prize in 1980. His works are in the permanent collections of The Dallas Museum of Fine Art, The Witte Museum, The San Antonio Art League, The University of Texas at Austin and The McNay Art Museum. In addition many prominent private collections both in the United States and internationally feature his works. In 1962 he began teaching art at the University of the Incarnate Word. Bill was named Professor Emeriti at the University of the Incarnate Word in 2000, where he served for 37 years as professor, advisor and Chairman of the Fine Arts Department. A graduate of Jefferson High School, Bill was a member of the San Antonio German Club and the San Antonio Country Club. He was also a creative consultant for the Order of the Alamo Coronations for many years. He was a founding member of the San Antonio Men of Art Guild, The San Antonio Art League, and the Friends of the McNay. Bill was predeceased by his father, William Anthony Reily M.D., mother, Anna Miller Reily, and sister, Catherine Ann Reily. He is survived by his son, Michael Carter Reily, as well as many friends and art collectors.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to any of the following: The McNay Art Museum Print Acquisition Fund, University of the Incarnate Word Fine Arts Department, the San Antonio Art League and The Witte Museum.
