John Gibbons Obituary

October 18, 1936 - October 18, 1936
John Richard Gibbons, born October 18, 1936, embraced God on November 27, 2014 in San Antonio, TX at the age of 77. Mr. Gibbons worked for almost 40 years for Southern Pacific Rail Road. His hobby was riding and repairing motorcycles, fishing, working on cars; he could fix just about any car or truck he worked on. We spent many vacations working on cars. He loved telling jokes and was really good at remembering them, to tell to his friends. He loved having his son's friends learn from him and taught boys in the neighborhood how to do mechanical things the best and right way. If you needed help he was eager and willing to help. He also loved to party and drink. But never drunk. His drinking and partying soon slowed and stopped as he found it wasn't as much fun. He was known by many as Big John (A Big Man with a Big Heart). He tried joining the Navy with his High school friend, but was turned down because he walked in his sleep, so no Military Service. His uncle, Paul Gibbons now deceased, was in the Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents John & Pearl Gibbons; brother Robert A. Gibbons and sister Nancy Sartic. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Opal L. Gibbons; son Roy G. Gibbons; daughter Rosemary Lorrain Gibbons Aguilar; grandchildren Roy Anthony Gibbons, Hallie Gibbons, Angel Antonette Marie (Gibbons) Olivarez, Jesse Olivarez, Ralph Aguilar III, Roxanne (Aguilar) Lyndsey and Logan Lyndsey; great grandchildren Abeni and Mila Gibbons; Noah Reyes, Rafael Juan Barrera, Blake Ketchum; brothers Raymond, Daniel and Larry Gibbons; sisters Shirley Gautney, Margaret Crutchfield and Linda L. Gibbons; many other relatives and friends. Big John will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

Big John! I remember my grandma Nancy telling my sister and I about him, and I remember meeting him once at a family reunion when I was just a little girl, it was the only family reunion I remember. He was remembered fondly, though I did not know him that well myself. I would love for someone to reach out.... we lost contact info. when Nancy died with extended family... Angela Arrington (maiden name - Angela O'Brien, daughter of Patricia O'Brien, grand daughter of Nancy Gibbons (that was her maiden name). Feel free to reach me at 214-208-8024.

My most sincere condolences. I have many fond memories working and "partying" with Big John for 30-years. Even hunting together! He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Never a dull moment! Good friend.
