My wife, Marion D. Fletcher at the time, was a patient of John Sanford. She had been a member of St. Luke's, Monrovia, and it was Morton Kelsey who helped her find her way to St. Margaret's House, the women's seminary for Christian Educators. She had moved to Niles, MI., and had connected with the Jungian therapist Helen Luke. Marion and I met in 1976 at St. Thomas Episcopal Chruch, terace Park, OH, where she was director of Christian Education. When we first identified our common interest in Jungian psychology, she put John's book, The Kingdom Within, into my hands, and in 1978 she became Mrs. Robert C. Funk.
Marion died of Alzheimer's in July 2014. When I happened to pick up The Kingdom Within, I hoped I might call him and tell him of the role of his book in our lives. I was sad to learn of his death. I did have the occasion to meet Morton, and viewed him as a sort of "father in law." I am glad to add a few words to honor John.

I join others in expressing condolences, even in 2017. It makes me wonder how the news of Jack's passing may continue to reverberate in the hearts of those who know him, personally, through his writing and lecturing, or through spouses who knew him.

Dear Linny:
I send my deepest condolences to you and the family. I was touched by Jack's wisdom and kindness. I consider my four years in therapy with him a time of acquiring compass and confidence. He was simply the best at listening and reflecting. I still have my dream journal and I still have a deep appreciation for Jack and the ways he helped me. I hope his spirit is still with you in the way his teachings are still with me. It is a benign and blessed transference.
Peace In Your Heart,

Dear Linny,
I am sorry to hear of Jack's passing. As you know, after more than twenty years with Jack as my friend and analyst, I owe him a debt that cannot be repaid. I have missed him over the past few years and still feel regret that he and I didn't have a proper farewell. Knowing him, and the impulse for growth which he exemplified, and which he so tenderly nurtured in me, I am sure that in his heart he understands.
I will always remember my friend and counselor, Jack--his smile, his understanding, his wisdom, his depth, his search for truth, his unconditional love. In my mind's eye, I continue to see and greet him.
I wish you comfort and beautiful memories in his absence.

Never a brighter light, a better teacher, a wiser counselor than Jack Sanford. Rather than telling us to "Knock, and it shall be opened unto you," he showed us how. Thank you, Jack, and hasta la vista.

I met Jack at Pecos, NM, when he came there for lectures at various times. I was the editor of the abbey's publishing house and newsletter. We promoted his wonderful books. I have been thinking of him lately and wondering how he was. We need his wisdom badly. His death is a great loss.
