Thomas Paine Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 3 to Sep. 7, 2016.
Thomas Hooker Paine June 25, 1928 - August 16, 2016 San Diego On August 16, 2016, Thomas Hooker Paine passed away peacefully at home in San Diego with his wife by his side.Tom was the second child of Anna Hooker Paine and Rodney F. Paine of Duluth. His education was at Phillips Exeter Academy and Princeton University, where he took a degree in economics. As a child in Duluth, Tom was known as an excellent chess player. One summer when Nobel Laureate Sinclair Lewis was in Duluth writing, he let it be known he could not find an adequate chess opponent; Tom spent the rest of the summer being that opponent. While Tom was at Princeton, he wrote an article for the campus paper on the futility and danger of the United States' pursuit of the Cold War. Albert Einstein, then doing research at Princeton, strongly supported this opinion and immediately invited Tom for an afternoon of tea and discussion on pacifism. In 1950, Tom began a career in economics at the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, where he was soon published on the topic of the rise of formal employee benefits and the need for their sound regulation to protect the public. This work led to an offer of partnership in a small Illinois-based human resources consulting firm, Hewitt Associates. That firm is now part of AON Hewitt, which has nearly 30,000 employees worldwide.Tom became a national thought leader on employee benefits and compensation, established Hewitt Associates' New York office, and was a major driver of the firm's rapid revolution of cash and non-cash compensation throughout the world. The firm was the only company asked by the U. S. government to consult on the Federal Interagency Task Force (1964-68) that led to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (1974). From this work flowed Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs, 1974) and new employee saving and investment opportunities through section 401(k) of the Revenue act of 1978.In 1981, The New York Times quoted Tom on his work with American Can Company on one of the earliest Flexible Benefits Programs, enabling employees to customize their benefits to their own needs. "Flexible plans give you more bang for the buck," he said. "This is not being done just to make people feel good."While he continued groundbreaking client work throughout the 1980s, Tom was recognized internally as a humble and unstinting mentor of young associates. In truth, he found his greatest rewards in these efforts. In the early 1990s, Tom undertook major international projects for Hewitt Associates. He built a team to assist the People's Republic of China in privatization of its state-owned industries. Then, in 1994, Tom led a second team to help British Hong Kong develop a Mandatory Provident Fund to provide a retirement income structure for the country prior to its return to China. With this work finished, Tom formally retired from Hewitt Associates. While living in New York, Tom had met Teresa Ann Norton, also a Hewitt Associates partner, and they were married in 1980. The two resided on the East Coast until 1990, when they made a major change in coasts and lifestyles.Tom and Teresa relocated to Napa Valley where they founded Vineyard 29, an exclusive, estate Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard that grew to cult status in the ten years they were vintners. The wine remains in high demand today under new ownership. Through charity auctions, Vineyard 29 raises substantial sums for heath care and animal welfare. Finally, in 2000, actual retirement seemed like a good idea. The couple moved in to Rancho Santa Fe and then San Diego, where they devoted their time to charity and academics.Tom was a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance, the Employee Benefits Research Institute, and the Napa Valley Vintners' Association and was named Volunteer of the Year for Interfaith Community Services in North County San Diego.Throughout his life, Tom was widely known for his charming absent-mindedness; in the 1950s Hewitt Associates abandoned its rule that consultants wear hats to client meetings partially because Tom left most of his hats at his clients' offices. He also had an uncanny ability to divert almost any conversation onto the topic of Prime Numbers, leaving his friends fascinated if not somewhat speechless. And, although Tom was not an athlete, his physical ability to hang multiple spoons off his nose and face (especially in elegant restaurants) astounded audiences and embarrassed his wife.Tom's wife and best friend, Teresa, survives him. He leaves three beloved sons from an earlier marriage: Thomas H. (Lisa); John K. (Patricia); and F. Rodney (Li); five treasured grandchildren; and a dear brother and sister.

Tom and Teresa have always been and will continue to be close to our hearts. It always impressed me how meek Tom was considering what an accomplished individual he was in life. He never made me feel lesser of a person because he was so smart and academic though I am not. He just talked, conversationally joking and making everyone feel comfortable. He and Teresa always made us feel warm and welcome. We never had to 'try' to be friends. It just happened with ease, like it was meant to be. We will always think of you with love Tom. And we will continue to grow closer yet with Teresa.

I remember one of my visits with Tom and Teresa at their home in San Diego. I stepped in through the door and placed my bag on the kitchen counter next to the cat food bowl. I was offered a snack of tomatoes from a rustic dish. Yes tomatoes. Not a typical snack one might offer a guest. But they were the best heirloom tomatoes I had ever eaten. When I asked from where they had come, Tom beamed and ushered me out the back door for a tour of the garden. This wasn't my first time through the garden, but it certainly was a memorable one. Sunny skies and the dogs running around the yard, tongues wagging about. Tom had been having a particularly good season so far, devoid of snake bite attacks (who knew gardening could be so treacherous?). Together we walked about the fruit trees and flower gardens, and to the tomatoes in the vegetable patch. This was a lengthy tour as we would frequently stop to talk about the various plants along the way. My thumb was certainly less green than Tom's but I loved to learn. And Tom was beaming the whole time.
I met Tom when I had just graduated from university, 12 years ago. I remember hearing of his work shaping social security programs in China, and his influence domestically within US policy. In these discussions, I really felt like I was in the presence of a celebrity. Of course he never aggrandized his work. It wasn't about what he had accomplished, they were just vignettes of his professional life stories shared over a bottle of Vin29. His stories, both personal and professional, were so inspiring that I found myself seeking similar experiences in my life. I moved from San Diego and started working as an HR professional in New York, blocks from where he and Teresa lived (literally 2 blocks). I moved abroad and joined a consultancy firm, helping shape programming for government entities. I even worked in a wine bar. And I hope to someday have a vegetable patch.
Tom was a teacher, a mentor, and a friend. But above all, he was a gardener. He planted seeds. These seeds set direction in my life, as they undoubtedly have shaped the dreams and ambitions of so many who were lucky to have known him. They taught me that I have a responsibility to treat others with kindness and love. These learnings and inspirations, little heirloom tomatoes, will live on and continue to drop their seeds for future generations, including for my 9 month old son. So thank you Tom. Not just for your impact on me, but for planting seeds that will grow into beautiful gardens.

We will miss you!

I was so fortunate to grow close with Tom and Teresa during my time living in San Diego. Moving so far from home for college was not the easiest thing, but having family nearby made the transition a bit easier. Tom and Teresa not only welcomed me into their home, but my friends, too, were always welcome. Tom and Teresa became part of my group of USD friends, and my years in San Diego would not have been the same without them. I will always think of Tom as brilliant, welcoming, loving, and fun, and he will me missed by so many. He touched many people during his life, and everyone who met Tom was made better for having known him.

Love,
Kate

It was our privilege to know brilliant, generous, caring, and, yes, also quite witty Tom--his puns were so funny. Tom and Teresa's friendship enriched our lives. Our travel experiences were better, and certainly more educational with Tom along. This was a good thing, as before our more recent trips, there was no Google! There are so so many wonderful memories over the 40 years we knew Tom. Our overarching memories revolved around good food and conversation. There were dinners prepared by famous chefs, picnics on the deck of a houseboat and at tailgates, High Tea at Harrods, Stone Crabs at Joe's, seafood dinners in Mississippi, and many others. The most enjoyable, however, were the great meals prepared by Tom and Teresa. Among his myriad of talents was cooking and making perfect martinis. We miss our good friend.

How can I express how special of a human being Tom was in just a few short sentences? To me Tom was a mentor and a fatherfigure. A genuine friend that no matter how trivial my topic of conversation he listened with open ears and an open heart, never with any judgment. Always willing to teach and inspire me for better with his gift of stories from his past and travels with Teresa. We came from different worlds and there was almost 50 years separating us but Tom never saw that, we were equals. He was humble. He was joyful and grateful for life. He was determined!!! I don't believe he knew what the word can't meant. I happen to know this because I was his physical trainer. We spent many years working together but in the end it was Tom who taught me more than I could have ever taught him. He was the life of the gym. Everyone knew Tom and everyone wanted to talk to him.

Through the years my family became an extended family to Tom and Teresa. One of my favorite memories was Tom meeting my daughter for the first time. To no surprise she was peaceful in his arms. His stories, teachings, his friendship and love will never be forgotten and will live in our hearts forever!

Dear Theresa and family,
My deepest sympathy in the loss of your husband, father, grandfather and friend. I did not know Tom. I read about him in the Chicago Tribune Obits. What a wonderful exciting man. He lived such a full life. From the pictures, you can tell, that he truly loved all of his family. I know he will be missed. He did so much for society to make the world a better place. Thank you for telling us a little about his fruitful life. I will remember him and all of you in my prayers.

My husband and I were lucky enough to get to know Tom over the past 10 years, and we will miss him dearly. It was a pleasure to read the obituary and learn so many incredibly impressive things about Tom's accomplishments before we knew him, and I found myself nodding with every one. None of them surprised me, because that same vibrant love for life and intellectual conversation was just as clear to me in our casual dinners together as it must have been to Albert Einstein and his Hewitt colleagues. It was impossible for me to not have a smile on my face when in Tom's company, and he wowed us with his stories of travel and intellectual intrigue. We will miss those nights.
