Dustin Fields Obituary

On Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, Dustin Stanley Fields decided not to wake up while on a business trip (not gambling, ironically) in Las Vegas. Dustin was a skater, magician, musician, rock climber, mountain biker, poker player, writer, SCUBA diver, photographer, basketball player, triathelete, tennis player, sarcastic SOB and more, but paid most of his debts by crafting software as a multinational professional elite software engineer for IQMS in Paso Robles. Dustin was an autodidact (look it up), obtaining his many degrees from the vast number of books he consumed, from Voltaire to Robert Anton Wilson to Douglas Hofstadter. He traveled the United States, Mexico and Asia and worked for a time in New Delhi, India for a non-governmental organization. He was a connoisseur and devotee of Pearl Jam (the rock group), attending more concerts than Eddie Vedder finished, and remembering the lyrics better than Eddie, too, which could possibly be they were under an influence. He played guitar and bass better than his father and most of his friends, and loved all kinds of music, including Mars Volta, the Beatles, YES, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, Bella Fleck and the Flecktones, and [insert your favorite band here]. He loved music. Dustin was so generous to share his love for music, especially his love of Pearl Jam, with anyone who knew what was good for them. He lived every day with a Pearl Jam melody in his head and the meaning of the lyrics in his heart. Even if sometimes he "sees man as half empty or sees them half of s**t, thinking that we''re all but slave, living out our days", he always remembered and was the first to say "we''re all just practicing, and this world''s an accident, and we''re all fools because we thought the world, but it turns out the world though we. It''s all the other way ''round... it''s upside down, but there is an upside of down." He is survived by everyone else on the planet with a pulse, but will be especially missed by his devoted mother Michelle Tucker; bio-dad Jim; second favorite sister Denise; nephew Eli; brother in law Ryan; (his other second favorite) sister Aryn; third-brother Rene Sanchez; .0125-sister Zoe Walker; stepmentor Ellen; cousin Eric (brother from another mother); best friend Troy; and novia Michl (la Tuerpa) Osio. The hundreds of relatives, friends and followers who will remember his wit and charm could have been found on his Facebook page, if he hadn''t thought Facebook a total waste of time. The friends and family that Dustin leaves behind will miss him for the rest of their lives. However, a refrigerator magnet in his apartment reminds us "he is watching, give him a good show."

That was an incredible obit. Touching, to say the least. I never knew him but had goosebumps reading it.

I read this obituary to my high school students in a social science class at Morro Bay High School on the day it appeared. It was truly - and I told this to the students - one of the most powerful obituaries I had ever read. I wish I had known Dustin. If I were any kind of a write, I suspect that I would be able to write an entire novel based solely on the information in this obituary. Thank you for sharing your love of Dustin with the rest of us.

I worked with Dustin, and found him to be 'real'. Yes he had his passions, but I only witnessed to one, his work. And how amazing that was. Another co-worker had the opportunity to work closely with Dustin, and had often commented on his creative contribution to the software. Set aside all, we miss him, and know that he'll find answers to many of his questions now.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. The writer of the obituary is Dustin's father, Jim Fields (with help and input from the rest of the family, of course). He can be reached at [email protected].

Sometimes an obituary can bring a person to life even though you never met them. I am sorry I never had the chance, truly interesting people are a gift to us all.

We wish we had known him. (Is the obit writer available for freelance work?)

I didn't know Dustin, but he sounds like a darn interesting guy & I wish I had known him. I'd like to offer my condolences to all his family and friends.
I am also very curious as to who his favorite sister would be, and as to who it was who wrote this perfectly fascinating and clever obit.
