He was born in Stockton, Calif., in April 1922, and a few months later, the family moved to Fresno, Calif., where he attended St. John''s Cathedral School and Theodore Roosevelt High School. During his senior year, he became Company commander of the school''s High School Cadet Corps. He graduated in June 1939 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in June 1940. He had attained the rank of Corporal when World War II started, and he rapidly rose through the ranks and became a First Sergeant in January 1943. In 1944, while serving at Aircraft, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific headquarters in Hawaii, he was promoted to Sergeant Major. At the end of the War, he was assigned as a Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Marine Corps Separation Center at Miramar, Calif. In July 1946, he left the Marine Corps and returned to Fresno, where he helped organize a Marine Corps Reserve unit. This unit was ordered to active duty in July 1950 to serve in the Korean War. John Anthony Enos was my "Uncle Jack" - younger brother to my dad, James R. Enos of Fresno. Daddy died many years ago, but we enjoyed occasional visits with Uncle Jack and Aunt Jayne. He was well thought of in the family and the funeral yesterday in Los Osos was beautiful and patriotic - a perfect tribute to a career marine. It was also great to see the cousins we had lost track of. Diane Enos McKelvey

John, his wife Jayne, my wife Elaine, and I worked many hours together in the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 65, Arroyo Grande. John was an outstanding instructor in legal requirements for safe boating--Rules of the Road. We patroled all our local lakes and Morro Bay. We helped boaters who were in distress, reminded water skiers and boaters to respect other boaters, and examined vessels for safety equipment to meet the standards of the Coast Guard. We also participated in many training exercises with the Coast Guard for Homeland Security.

Over the years the four of us became fast friends. We camped together in our RV's both with the Flotilla and also on our own. The 4th Cornerstone was our specialty--having fun together! We enjoyed lots of fish frys, 5 o'clock martinis, and laughter. The four of us also enjoyed a land-sea tour of Alaska with Ed and Ky Sayers, another couple from the Flotilla.

After my wife Elaine's passing, we continued our friendship. John attended my grandson's graduation from the Naval Academy. John was a great friend and will be missed.
