John Bassford

John Bassford, 73, died of pneumonia Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010. Born in Chicago and raised in La Canada, Calif., he graduated from John Muir High School in 1956. He married JoAnne Loy, whom he had met in high school. They had three children. John was a private detective, bounty hunter and used car salesman. Through his work, he discovered a love for travel. Offered a job with Southern Pacific Railroad, he jumped at the chance, and in 1960, started a career with the railroad that lasted almost four decades. John was a Scottish Rite Freemason and a member of the local Elks lodge. In retirement, he turned to what he loved most - golf and family. His marriage to Sandy Hertz eight years ago brought him joy in having a larger family. John is survived by his wife, Sandy; his children Julie Tizzano-Schumann (Steve) of Arroyo Grande, Janet Moran (Tim) of Big Bear Lake, and John Bassford (Pam) of Prescott, Ariz.; step-children Michelle Hertz of San Luis Obispo and Laurel Hertz of Calabasas, Calif.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, John H. Street; mother, Frances C. Raitt; and step-daughter, Victoria Hertz. Funeral arrangements are pending.
