Marlin Lee Stebbins

Marlin Lee Stebbins of Avila Beach, was born in August 1933 in Coudersport, Pa., and died Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at his home. He met and married his wife of 56 years, Nina, in Bakersfield, Calif. They moved to the Central Coast in 1957 and have lived in the area ever since. Marlin was in the U.S. Army, where he served basic training at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md. After basic training, he was sent to Camp Irwin, Calif., where he served out the remainder of his military service. He worked for this three brothers-in-law as a carpenter until work was short. He then went to work at Port San Luis Harbor District in September 1966. He had worked as a mobile hoist operator, dock worker and was facilities manager when he retired on Nov. 30, 1994. Marlin and Nina were the caretakers of Point San Luis Lighthouse for 31 years. He was dedicated to his family, job and the care of the Lighthouse property. Marlin was a member of the American Legion Post 136 in Arroyo Grande, Eagles Aerie 4153 in Oceano and was a lifetime member of the NRA. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and just spending time with the love of his life, Nina. He loved people, would call you by your first name and shake your hand like you were his oldest friend. Marlin is survived by his wife, Nina; five children Laura Overstreet of Chandler, Ariz., William Stebbins (Teresa) of Pismo Beach, Joni Brewer (Larry) of Oceano, Deborah Schwartz (Russ) of Chandler and Edward Stebbins of Nipomo. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Milton Stebbins (Betty) of Port Allegany, Pa.; sister, Donna Sherwin of Allegany, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Eva Stebbins of Coudersport; and son, Ronald Stebbins of Grover Beach. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at the American Legion Hall, 417 Orchard Ave., in Arroyo Grande.
