Mary Tschurr Obituary

Mary Louise Berkey Morton Tschurr, 91, went peacefully to be with Jehovah, Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at her home in Arroyo Grande. Mary, the daughter of Orange and Ivy of Belpre, Kan., moved to California in 1926. After graduating from Fairfax High School, she attended Los Angeles City College and Long Beach State University, where she graduated with a master''s degree in Elementary School Administration. In early 1973, after the death of her first husband, Harry, and a long teaching career in the Manhattan Beach School District, where she held the position of Girls P.E. instructor, Mom moved to Arroyo Grande. Mom met Henry "Hank" Tschurr Jr. through a local square dancing club and soon wed in December 1974. Mom had a great love of animals and nature, and loved to hike the Pismo dunes on Saturday mornings with Hank and her Doxy, Bruno. Mary is survived by her sister, Cecilia; and son, Marvin of Arroyo Grande. They will miss her dearly, as will her pet chicken, Chicker Doddle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at The Kingdom Hall, 1279 S. 13th St., in Grover Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Partners of the Central Coast, 277 South St. Ste. R, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.

Mary was one of the original members of our running club when it was formed in 1974. She was in her mid-50's at a time when most women that age did not participate in athletic activities. However, her background as a PE teacher had shown her the important of exercise at any age. She was a regular entrant in local runs, including a five mile in Pismo Beach that was the first race sponsored by our club. She was always cheerful, upbeat, and pleasant and it was a pleasure to know her.
