Wayne Stanfield Obituary

Wayne E. Stanfield passed away peacefully Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, with his family by his side. He was an automobile genius, loving husband, cherished father and the best grandfather ever. He was born in Highmore, S.D., in 1921 and graduated from Rapid City High School, where he earned three letters in basketball. By the end of World War II, he had met and married Dorothy Binder, a marriage that lasted 44 years. Wayne''s passion was restoring antique (pre-1915) automobiles, a hobby he worked on until shortly before his death. A former president and board member of the Horseless Carriage Club of America and its Bay Area chapter, Wayne enjoyed sharing his hobby with anyone within earshot. Wayne and Dorothy retired to the tiny Central Coast beach town of Cayucos in 1979, where Wayne became an Auto Body Instructor at Cuesta College. After Dorothy''s death in 1979, Wayne moved into the next phase of his life, acting! Soon he was a fixture in the drama department, having earned three AA degrees and appeared in many Cuesta productions. He was proud to have provided the Joad''s jalopy in The Grapes of Wrath. Wayne is survived by his daughter, Marcia Benjamin (David); brother, Laurel; and his 14-year old granddaughter and "light-of-his-life," Miriam. Burial was private. Donations in his memory would be appreciated by the Cuesta College Drama Department, San Luis Obispo, CA. Sinai Memorial Chapel (925) 962-3636 Lafayette, Calif.

Mr. Stanfield will be dearly missed by many. He was always doing something in his garage or yard whenever you would pass by. And, he always enjoyed sharing with anyone who dropped by. When his buddies would visit he felt like he had 'loafing' after taking a few days to enjoy his company. Soon after you could finding him pulling weeds. Nice to have crossed paths with him as a customer, neighbor and parade addition. Warmest regards, Susan Estes (former Cayuco's resident)

I fondly remember Mr. Stanfield from his Coalesce Bookstore visits. My co-worker and I delivered a book to his house once and was treated to his great hospitality - adding a tour of his many projects and automobiles!! Great stories and wit, adding an avid interest in all things and people.
He was a very kind man and spoke so wonderfully of his family, esp. his grandchild. He always looked forward to seeing her.
I saw him some time ago in Morro Bay doing errands with a helper and he still had that wonderful wit and spark!
I was very blessed to have known him. He will be greatly missed.
My heartfelt sympathy to his family.

Wayne will be remembered by many friends in Cayucos. He was a special participant in the Antique Gasoline Engine Show every Memorial Day weekend in Old Cayucos. He delighted in giving children rides in the latest of his old "cars". He will be missed by all of us, and we will think him often. Hank and Mary Ellen Eisemann
