Winnie Clayton Root

Winnie Root Obituary

Winnie Clayton Root, 96, died from complications of pneumonia Friday, Dec. 4, 2010, at her home in San Luis Obispo. She was born in Rush Springs, Okla., in 1914, the second youngest of seven children. At age six, the family relocated to the Pomona, Calif., area, and at age 12, several members of the family moved to San Luis Obispo. Winnie graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 1932 and later attended Pomona College. In 1936, she married Fred L. Gist, and at age 22, moved into what was then her mother-in-law''s house on Mill St., which has remained her home to this day. Two daughters were born of the marriage, Anne Faith Gist and Judy Hope Gist. The young couple was active in the business, political and social fabric of the city. Fred, in his father''s real estate and insurance businesses, served on city committees and also one term on the city council. The marriage ended in divorce, and seven years later Fred was lost on his annual fishing trip to the High Sierras. Winnie loved the ocean and traveled extensively on passenger carrying freighters; once down the West coast of South America, then to the summer Olympics in Japan in 1964, and most memorably, a seven month trip around the world. She was probably happiest in her gardens, and until recent years, could be seen working in her garden every day. Her efforts were recognized by Obispo Beautiful as well as many passers by. Winnie was a charter member of the SLO Golf and Country Club and although she took up golf late, she became a rather capable player. She was the Ladies Club Champion in 1964, won the first of the annual grandmothers tournaments and about 30 years later, tied for first in that event, but was carded out. She was also the first woman to make a hole-in-one on what is now the 17th hole at the Club. Reluctantly, she gave up golf at age 85. She often said that golf saved her life. In 1970, she married Charles "Put" Root, a retired U.S. Navy Medical Officer. They shared enthusiasm for gardening, golf, travel and the San Francisco Giants baseball. Winnie is survived by her husband of 40 years; daughter, Judy Anslinger and her husband; five grandchildren and their spouses; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandson. Also by her husband''s family: three daughters and their spouses; two granddaughters and their spouses; and one great-grandson. Local survivors include her grandson, Chris Paris and family of Paso Robles. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings; and older daughter, Ann (Gist) Paris Corrigan. At her request, there will be no service and disposition will be private.

Put, Judy and family: I apologize for not knowing that Winnie passed away on Dec. 4th when I saw you at The Spirit this Sunday. That's one negative for only subscribing to the weekend editions. I'll be sending you a photo of Winnie from the SLO Dine And Dance Club scrapbook. Winnie and my mother were active golfers at the SLO CC, but my mother Mary never had a hole in one! I'm forever thankful that Winnie gave me two old photos for a book I am writing on four generations growing up in San Luis Obispo. I especially liked that photo of Fred standing alongside a '38 or '39 Chrysler product that was being delivered to some local celebrity on Monterey Street, back before the War when Monterey Street was "Auto Row". Give my best to Judy. I wasn't aware that her older sister Ann had passed. It's a shame not many of Winnie's generation comment on this site.
