Alfred Conde died at home in Watsonville on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was 79.
He was born in Manteca, CA on June 17, 1936 to Desdu and Mary Conde. After his father died he took over the farm at age 14 to support his mother and his 5 siblings. In 1957 he married a lovely Watsonville girl that he knew from a very young age. Later, Al and Virginia were able to start their own ranch, known as Mellody Ranch, and built a beautiful home for their family. He was a Jack of all trades!
After the births of their daughter and son, they were involved extensively in 4-H, raising sheep and goats and showing at county fairs in California. Al loved to camp in his RV and became long time members of the Watsonville Hub Club. He also went clamming and took part in many other activities with family and friends. He was known to have the best "pig parties" around, along with the Portuguese wine he made. He was proud of his Portuguese heritage and attended many fiestas and events.
He was an excellent farmer that grew berries for Berry Bowl. Alfred was a very well known apple farmer in the Pajaro Valley. For the last 32 years the family has been growing crops extensively for the Bay Area Farmers Markets. He was very proud of the Mellody Ranch market stand.
Alfred is survived by his wife, Virginia of 58 years, his daughter Darlene (Darren) Mora, son Steven Conde and four grandsons, Michael, Dustin, Christopher Mora and Kyle Conde and a granddaughter Lily Mora. By his sisters, Barbara Terra, Dorothy (Manuel) DeCosta, Betty (Darryl) Skiles, brother Manuel (Doris) Conde and brother in law Anthony Cunha and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marybell Cunha, and brother-in-law Gilbert Mello.
To honor Alfred's wishes, there will be no services. However, the family will be having a celebration of life at a later time.
In leiu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association or to your favorite charity.
