Lois Muhly Obituary

Lois Roberts Muhly
May 9, 1926 - August 10, 2015
Resident of Santa Cruz
Lois Muhly passed away peacefully at the age of 89 with her loving family by her side.
Lois was born in Porterville, Ca and was raised on the Jacalitos Ranch, a homestead settled by her French Ancestors, located near Coalinga, Ca.
Lois met her future husband, Bert, at Bergstrom Field, Austin, Texas, where Bert was stationed as a weather Technician in the Army Airforce. Lois flew out to visit her brother Stan and was introduced to Bert. They were married two years later on October 19, 1946. Both attended UC Berkeley, as they started their young family. After having six children, Lois earned a Bachelor of Education degree at SJSU in 1965,and a Master's of Education from USF in 1978. Lois taught school at the elementary level for 29 years, primarily in the Soquel Unified School District until her retirement in 1988. Lois taught in one of the original Spanish bilingual programs in the area.
Along with Bert, Lois was an active member of Coalition for Nicaragua, Alliance for Children, Children's Creative Response to Conflict, Women's Democratic Club, People's Democratic Club, Resource Center for Non-Violence and were also actively involved in local, state, and national politics. In their desire to, "Make the World a Better Place", Lois and Bert created, "Three Americas", a non-profit organization, where members sold Nicaraguan coffee at the Aptos Farmers Market on Saturdays. Lois and Bert were well-known in the Farmer's Market community during their "retirement years".
Through poetry, writing, watercolor, and music, Lois interpreted the world around her offering her family a beautiful perspective on life. Family camping and road trips included hiking, identifying flowers, birds, and trees (she knew them all), singing songs, and storytelling around the many campfires, of her many adventures growing up on the Jacalitos Ranch.
Lois was also actively involved in her children's extracurricular activities. She was a Bluebirds, Brownies, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts leader and PTA president.
Lois had an adventurous spirit! She loved to climb mountains, travel the world with her artist and political communities, and even took flying lessons!
Her grandchildren have fond memories of the annual snow skiing trips (especially the hearty stew she and grandpa would bring to the slopes to warm their tummies, before setting out for an afternoon skiing session), and waterskiing (grandma did backflips off of the houseboat at age 85!)
Grandma loved the Giants and rarely missed watching a game. Devoted fans, Lois and Bert enjoyed most of their grandchildren's sporting events, many times attending four events in one day!
Lois was very intelligent and possessed an incredible dry wit and sense of humor. She completed a crossword puzzle daily and was also the "Scrabble Queen!"
Lois was a beautiful, kind, and loving person. She was a mentor and mother to many. She generously opened her home to her community, offering meals, or a glass of wine-her door was always open. She was an amazing cook, and hosted many political fundraisers over the years.
Holidays were filled with love and joy, as well as a properly set table for the large Muhly Clan. At Christmastime, this was usually followed by a mandatory skit or musical performance by all family members before presents could be opened.
On her last day, Lois picked up her dear friend Lois Trabing for their usual Wednesday walk on the wharf, and lunch at Stagnaros afterwards. It was a beautiful sunny Santa Cruz summer day. Lois said, 'Mom walked further than she ever had!' Lois lived life large, and made friends with all who shared her path along the way. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Lois is survived by her children, Patricia Vargas (Martin), Bill Muhly, Jenny Hutson (John), Janet Windt (Michael), and Ernest Muhly (Cindy), 23 Grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Louis Bertram Muhly, her parents Ernest Roberts and Anne (GiGi) Lane, her brothers Stanley Roberts and William Roberts, her daughter Sally Hallowell, and her grandson Miguel Munoz.
The Muhly Clan would like to thank AMR, Santa Cruz City Fire Dept, Dignity Health Emergency Services, CCU, and Palliative Care staff, for providing exceptional care in Lois's final days and for supporting our family through this difficult time.
Services will be held September 26, 2015, at 3:00pm at the Peace United Church of Christ (formerly First Congregational Church), 900 High St, Santa Cruz, Ca.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Resource Center for Non-Violence, 612 Ocean St., Santa Cruz, Ca, 95060 or Three Americas, Inc. PO Box 711, Santa Cruz, Ca 95061-0711

For 8 years I have given a pound of Tres Americas' coffee to the Cabrillo Farmers Market vendors with whom Lois did business. The only requirement I requested upon receiving the coffee was to say "Lois"
She wasn't my grandma, but she AND Bert were my friends
PRESENTE!!

I still give a bag of 'Gold' coffee to those with whom Lois traded for groceries.

We all say 'Lois & Bert' at the exchange: Presente!

I was dubbed, by Bert, as his sherpa for the Aptos Farmer's Market. After Bert's death, I shopped with Lois, as her sherpa.

When either was not at the Market, I'd go to Dominican to visit. I remember after Lois' fall, she was unconscious when I arrived. To the surprise of her family, when I walked in, Lois opened her eyes and said 'Hi Lee'.

To this day, the first Saturday of each month, I buy a bag of Gold coffee beans and give it to those with whom Lois gave coffee during her shopping. All that I ask of the recipient is that they say her name!

Presente!!

Wow, what a heroine. Lois helped me become a conflict resolution trainer in the early 80"s and continued to be the backbone of the peace movement in Santa Cruz for decades. I have always been awed by she and Bert. I am sad to say goodbye.

A few weeks ago I found a note from my dear friend, Lois Muhly. She wrote about listening to lovely cueca, the sweetest music ever so I searched for cueca on Pandora and sure enough, sweet tunes from Central America, Chile and Argentina led me through the most productive day. I placed her note on the mantle and lit a candle. Then I wrote and mailed her a note, not realizing she would not receive it except as an angel. Just last month, I visited her in Santa Cruz and she was happy and funny as ever. I wouldn't trade those hugs for nothin'. It felt like home- sitting around her #ThreeAmericas meeting table again. We had tea with Justin, Jenny, and Greg, talked about camping trips, and laughed as I looked through her office for a picture album I left there two years ago, as she said in pure honesty, It is LOST if it was HERE! Her office was filled with tons of work from several organizations where she volunteered. I forgot about the picture album and just looked around in awe of all this woman accomplished, most of which could never be accounted for in that office but rather out in the real world helping others through www.threeamericas.org, the Santa Cruz Resource Center for Non-violence, and many other organizations. Lois gave so much of herself to all who crossed her path and inspired me to pay it forward. When we needed money for a project, Lois' famous words were, Looks like we need to have a PARTY! and the planning began for a fundraiser that was always accompanied by the most dedicated friends, delicious food, and sweet music. I'm going to miss her so much. My heart goes out to her beautiful, big family and all who love her so much too.

I was lucky enough to be trained by Lois in Creative Conflict Resolution for Children at her lovely home, and then recently to stage her photograph (taken by Charles Berger) and interview her. I feel lucky to have my life touched ever so gently by Lois's wonderful being. -Paula LeRoy

Lois' pastoring of Three Americas, is irreplaceable. Of all the projects she supported, it was her primary focus, having given it birth, with Bert, as The Coalition for Nicaragua, later to become Three Americas, one of Santa Cruz's most effective foreign aid agencies. We can only hope that the organization will have the talent and support to operate without Lois' guidance.

While in Havana with them, Lois had the idea of visiting a random Cuban's apartment. How do you do that? Well, walk up to someone and ask. She did that, and so four of us had a special and memorable visit. What a wonderful person!

I saw Lois at Shopper's Corner a couple of months ago. We had not seen one another for years. It was such a sweet reunion. We used to be neighbors, living around the corner from one another. Lois was the dearest, most supportive woman. I cherish her.

Lois Muhly! What a wonderful woman! I will remember her for many things, but one thing I won't forget is her SINGING, putting out great political lyrics to edify and delight. I note the family is suggesting some contributions. May I second that suggestion? Both Bert and Lois would have approved of that!

So very sorry to hear of Lois' passing. I really enjoyed working with her and Bert when Bert and I served for ten years on the Sister Cities Committee together, and later I enjoyed running into them at the Farmer's Market. Yes, warm, welcoming, and they certainly lived life to the fullest and with purpose. My condolences to the family.

The Muhlys and my family have been neighbors for 45 memorable years. Lois always welcomed us with open arms, whether it was the kids trick-or-treating or me borrowing an egg. She was warm, kind and generous and felt like a second mother to me. Lois cared for her family, her neighbors, stray cats and people in distant lands. She was a truly memorable woman.

I receive this news with great grief. I met Bert and Lois during the eighties in Managua while I was Head of Casa Nicaraguense de EspaƱol, where they attended our program in one or two periods. Since then I've been living back in Chile which is where I come from.
I visited their home in Santa Cruz in the spring of 2011 and played music (I'm a musician) in their front garden with two other musicians to a group of guests. It was the most pleasant and friendly day of that visit to the United States.
I would like to express my condolence to the Muhly family. But also my gratitude to the universe for having had the experience of meeting such beautiful couple of human beings. Un abrazo
