Jon Ebbs Obituary
Jon D. Ebbs
Jan. 14, 1939 - May 15, 2013
Resident of La Selva Beach
Jon D. Ebbs, born January 14, 1939 in Chicago, was the youngest of three boys born to Richard and Gretchen Ebbs. His father was in the Army and Army Corps of Engineers; so his family relocated often during his childhood and included a one-year stint in Japan marked by the family's arrival on one of the first post-WWII transports. Jon finished high school in the Panama Canal Zone and later graduated from Oregon State University (OSU) with a degree in business. It was at OSU that he met his wife of 50 years, Mary Ann Ashley Ebbs.
Jon went on to work for General Electric Corp. (GE) completing the business-training program in Bridgeport, CT and joining GE's corporate audit staff. He had a successful 17-year career, which eventually took him to California's Santa Clara Valley. He went on to work for both Atari and Apple Computer. He retired at the age of 50, and in 1990 Jon and Mary Ann moved to Bend, OR where they purchased a 10-acre ranch. They golfed, skied, played bridge, and enjoyed ranch life, including all the hard work!
In 2007 Jon and Mary Ann relocated to La Selva Beach, CA to be closer to their children and grandchildren. On May 15, 2013 Jon passed peacefully, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann, son Ken Ebbs and wife Deborah of Los Altos, daughter Karen and husband Steve Beltramo of Santa Cruz, and grandchildren Anthony and Kyler Ebbs, and Enzo and Carmen Beltramo. Jon is also survived by his brother Joseph Ebbs and wife Charlene from Washington and their family.
An enthusiastic baseball and basketball player, Jon will be remembered for his rabid enthusiasm and for his loud, boisterous, good-natured love of the game. Win or lose, he was a loyal fan. Often he drove hundreds of miles over snowy mountain passes to watch his beloved OSU Beavers play football in the rain. From the 1970's until his death, Jon remained a noisy Oakland A's fan and followed the team's stats and the subtlest details of their seasons. In later years he loved playing duplicate bridge.
Jon was loyal and faithful not only to his sports teams but to his family and friends. Jon was outspoken and always viewed as a "straight shooter" and as a man who lived by a core set of values: be honest to all, including yourself; maintain integrity in all dealings; work hard for your benefit and for the people you care about; take responsibility for your actions; live life; play hard; pursue the things you love. Jon will be remembered for his smile, his great enthusiasm for life, and his never-ending sense of humor. For his family and friends, the world will be a quieter and less funny place without him.
