HENRY CHILDS Obituary

H. Prentiss Childs Died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 7, 2011 in Denver, Colorado of a stroke. He was 83 years old. Born in Iowa City, Iowa on June 9, 1927, Mr. Childs grew up in the Washington D.C. area. He served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from Yale University in 1949 before moving to New York City, where he met and married Nancy Craze. Mr. Childs began working as a producer for the CBS Television Network in 1956, after briefly pursuing a career in theater. Following his CBS Foundation Fellowship with the Columbia University Graduate School, the Childs moved to Washington D.C. in 1963, where Mr. Childs joined the CBS News Washington Bureau, co-producing Face the Nation until 1974. He then became public affairs coordinator for PBS. Mr. Childs and his family relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1975, where Mr. Childs served as Administrator for the State of New Mexico Oil Conservation Division until retiring in 1994. He and his wife then moved to Las Vegas, N.M. In 2008, the Childs left New Mexico after 33 years, to travel and be closer to their children and grandchildren in the Denver-metro area. Mr. Childs had, until recently, been very healthy and athletic, enjoying being active with his family. He demonstrated great concern for both local and global community and was committed to peace and justice throughout his life. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy C. Childs; his three children: Catherine, Christina (Somes), and Marquis, their spouses; six grandchildren; and two step grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Hegmann Funeral Services in Idaho Springs, Colorado. A Celebration of Life is planned for Thursday, June 9, at the Highland City Club in Boulder, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Prentiss Childs may be sent to any of the following: Habitat for Humanity, Veterans for Peace, or Compassion Beyond Borders.

Dear Nancy,
It is with great sadness that I read about Prentice's death this morning. He was a true gentleman, a tribute to this comunity that he adopted.
I wish you and your family my deepest sympathy and that you may find solace in your loss by remembering his great impact, his compassion, and of how he walked through our world.
