WILLIAM MARTINEZ Obituary

WILLIAM M. MARTINEZ The family of William M. Martinez, with deep sorrow, wants to announce the passing into eternal life of their beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, and uncle, on Friday, November 2, 2012 at Mountain View Regional Hospital in Las cruces, NM. William was born on May 2, 1939 to Ben Martinez and Helen Medrano Martinez in Santa Fe, NM and was also raised there. He was retired from the National Park Service where his jobs were many as he was Facility Manager and Maintenance Supervisor. He worked in many parks in the Southwest including: Chaco Canyon National Monument, Bandolier National Monument, and Grand Canyon National Park, where he worked in the National Rim of the Grand Canyon. There he and his wife Alicia wintered for 4 12 years after the roads were closed by the snow. He also worked at Organ Pipe Cactus Monument for the last 11 years of his Park Service Career. Earlier in his life, he also worked for the Forest Service, and he taught carpentry with the job corp. Early in his life he also worked as a Carpenter with his father Ben, who taught him his craft. He also worked at times for other private contractors. William was always proud that he served in the Military Service, in the Navy, where he worked as an electrician on the crew of an "Air Ship" or a Surveillance Airplane. He sometimes regretted that he was never stationed on an actual "Ship." When he was very young, in his teens, He also served in the New Mexico National Guard. When he retired, he worked for several years as a volunteer Reserve Deputy for the Sheriffs office, under both Gary Ciccotelli and Raymond Cobos. He also worked as a volunteer driver for the Cancer Support. On Occasion, he also volunteered at his Parish St. Ann Catholic Church. William was a Master Carpenter by trade and an artist in his heart. He had many hobbies, which included: Lapidary, Welding, Carving and he picked up the craft of tin working from his paternal grandfather, Jose Maria Apodaca. Some of Jose Maria's tin work is currently on display at the Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe. William amazed people because he had the ability to create so many beautiful things with his hands, in so many different media. His love for Motorcycles, since he was a young boy, gave him many hours of pleasure in his retirement years. William had a great love for outdoors and enjoyed hiking and camping in the mountains and spending days alone in the desert. He had a great respect for the wilderness areas and for the wilderness animals and animals in general. Especially, horses and dogs. He installed his love for animals in all three of his children. He never satisfied his hunger for learning, researching and acquiring new interests. His ranges of interests were vast from learning about ancient civilizations to new and future technology. He loved reading his bible and read from it everyday. He is survived by his loving wife, Alicia Martinez of Deming, NM; two daughters, Denise Martinez and Lyndi Martinez both of Santa Fe, NM; two grandchildren, Landon Roser and Avery Roser; two sisters, Rosemarie Beaty and Irene Quintana; one brother, Ben G. Martinez and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends-some of them who had adopted him as "Uncle Bill." He will be truly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; one daughter, Kami Martinez and one brother, Bobby Martinez. Viewing will be on Monday, November 12, 2012 from 5-7pm with the holy rosary beginning at 7pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels. I was out of town and just found out that Mr. Martinez passed away. My sincere condolences to his family. I worked with Mr. Martinez while he was a reserve with the Sheriffs Department here in Deming. After that my family and I ran into him frequently around town. He was always happy and we both enjoyed a few minutes of conversation everytime we ran into eachother. My wife, my daughters and I will really miss you! You will always be in our thoughts and in our prayers. You are and always be a good man. May you rest in peace. Lionel, Jennifer, Stephany, Isabella.

Your Spirit

A Tribute to My Father -
I know that no matter what
You will always be with me.
When life separates us
I'll know it is only your soul
Saying goodbye to your body
But your spirit will be with me always.
When I see a bird chirping on a nearby branch
I will know it is you singing to me.
When a butterfly brushes gently by me so care freely
I will know it is you assuring me you are free from pain.
When the gentle fragrance of a flower catches my attention
I will know it is you reminding me
To appreciate the simple things in life.
When the sun shining through my window awakens me
I will feel the warmth of your love.
When I hear the rain pitter patter against my window sill
I will hear your words of wisdom
And will remember what you taught me so well'
That without rain trees cannot grow
Without rain flowers cannot bloom
Without life's challenges I cannot grow strong.
When I look out to the sea
I will think of your endless love for your family.
When I think of mountains, their majesty and magnificence
I will think of your courage for your country.
No matter where I am
Your spirit will be beside me
For I know that no matter what
You will always be with me.

William and I were in AAA Detachment NM National Guard 1954-55. We lost contact with each other when we went our separate ways after high school. A few years later we met again and reminised about the old days. What I knew about William after that was through his brother Ben. Ben and Dolores continue to be friends and visit from time to time.
Ruby and I would like to offer our condolences to your family and to let you know that William will be in our thoughts and prayers.
