Bernard Greenwell Obituary
Bernard Emery Greenwell
Bernard Emery Greenwell passed away on October 4, 2010. Born on the Fourth of July, 1926 in Olney Springs, Colorado, Emery was the fifth child of George C. and Bessie Florence Greenwell. After graduating from Arroyo Grande High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country in the Korean War. He lived in Santa Maria for nearly sixty years.
He was predeceased by his older brother George and his younger brother Roger. He is survived by his sisters Stella Ruth Heckart of Fowler, Colorado, Florence Josephine Grigsby and Marjorie Virginia Bewley of Santa Maria. He was a huge part of the foundation of a large, loving family.
After the death of his father in 1955, Emery lovingly dedicated himself to caring for his mother and raising his younger brother Roger. After the loss of his mother in 1974, Emery spent the rest of his life fulfilling his dream of seeing the world. Especially after his retirement from the government in 1984, it was a challenge for the family to keep abreast of Emery's travels. Sometimes, the only clue to his whereabouts was a post card from a faraway place. In recent years, he served as a guide for touring groups.
Emery had such passion for life and all it had to offer. Dancing, reading, gardening, decorating cakes, going to the theater or the casinos or to see fireworks-Emery loved it all. He was the recipient of many dance awards and even appeared on televised competitions. Rarely a holiday passed that he didn't provide a bag of his famous sour cream cookies which were always appropriately decorated for the occasion. Many nieces and nephews deemed him "favorite uncle" because if it was fun, Emery would do it with them. He loved adventure but seemed happiest when the family gathered simply for a meal or a game of dominoes. Family was everything to Emery and the loss of loved ones in recent months saddened him deeply.
Independence, dignity and integrity defined Emery – to the very end. Family, friends, neighbors, travel companions and dance partners will miss him.
Cremation was arranged by the Neptune Society. Emery's request was that the next time you do something enjoyable, do it in his memory. The family thanks all for their kind words and support.
