Robert Herbstreith Obituary

ROBERT (BOB) HERBSTREITH
Robert (Bob) Herbstreith, age 78, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2010 at Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, CA.
Bob was born in O'Fallon, Illinois to Frank and Alvina Herbstreith on August 5, 1932. He had five sisters and one brother. After graduating from high school, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1951-1955. While he was in the service, Bob married Phyllis Thomas and they had three daughters and one son together.
After his discharge from the Navy, Bob lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he worked for the telephone company and then as a police officer. In 1958 Bob and his family moved to Southern California and then to Santa Maria. During this time he worked in the aerospace industry for Rockwell and then Martin-Marietta for over 30 years.
Bob was active in the Orcutt Lions Club and the Santa Maris Elks Lodge where he enjoyed a good BBQ and camping with the Elk's Traveleers. He was quite the outdoorsman and chef. Bob loved to hunt, fish, hike, and camp with family and friends, and enjoyed preparing food for any occasion whether it be on a camp stove or for a holiday dinner.
Bob and Phyllis divorced in 1984 and he later married Genell Berry. Upon Bob's retirement, he and Genell settled in Crossville, Alabama, where they enjoyed the country life and Bob expanded his hobbies to include raising goats, sheep, horses, beef cattle and Texas long horns. Many of his days in Crossville were spent down at the local Livestock Auction Barn or enjoying a cup of coffee with friends. After Genell (mother of Gwen McCool and Michael Harbin) passed away on October 27, 2009, Bob returned to the central coast where he resided at Santa Maria Terrace and enjoyed spending time "tending the roses" in the garden and playing a friendly game of poker with the friends he made there.
Bob was preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa Herbstreith on August 23, 1972.
He is survived by two daughters, Lori Herbstreith (and Glenn) of San Jacinto, CA and Pamela (and Bill) Haas of Aurora, CO. and one son Jeffrey (and Liz) Herbstreith of Nipomo, CA.; five grandchildren - Michelle, Tyler, Aimee, Nicholas, Tanner; five step-grandchildren - Christopher, Richard, Robert, Elizabeth and Victoria; and one step great grandson, Jameson.
A Memorial Service for Bob will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 3:00 pm at the chapel of the Dudley Hoffman Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in Bob's name.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary, Crematory and Memory Gardens.

Woody Reed loved his friendship with Bob (and Mark)....their own happy hours and poker playing. Sharing stories of the good old days. How very sad they died within two weeks of each other. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. He seemed like quite a character who will be very missed. As is our Woody.

Bob used to bring me a rose everyday. He was a wonderful man that taught us many things. He seemed to know something about everything. Since his gardening skills were so great, I put him in charge of the gardeners and our grounds have never looked prettier. We are all going to miss Bob very much.
