Wow!...all I can say is WOW! He was some young man! Matthew Charles can be a role model for so many. I come from a family of military officers. I have lived in Richmond Hill for almost 3 years. I only recently read about Matthew. You/parents and family must be so proud! What a terrific man! God Bless!

I only met Matt one time years ago at a party at your house. I think he might have been 11 or 12 years old at the time, maybe a bit older. He impressed me as "energetic" to say the least. Its a true credit to you both Gary and Lisa for raising Matt to become such a fine young man. The courage to volunteer for such a duty as Matt did can only be found in the true bravery of a true hero. Heidi and I can't express our sorrow for your loss, a loss that only time might tend to make bearable.

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

The last time I saw Matt was years ago in Pensacola, but the thing that sticks out most in my mind is that he was always smiling. I remember him as a genuinely happy person--the kind of person you could look at and know he wanted to get the most out of every situation he was in. I admire his enthusiasm, and his desire to live life to the fullest. I am humbled by his bravery and selflessness, and feel so fortunate to have known such a great man. To the Freeman family. Like so many people writing here, I did not have the privilege of personally knowing Matthew, but it has been my privilege to have known him indirectly in that as a civilian employee of the Naval Academy for the past 18 years, Matthew would have been one of the 1200 plebes in the audience in July 1998 when I gave the class of 2002 a briefing on the computers they would be receiving the next day.
Of course no words I write can express or even acknowledge the grief you are feeling now. Just know that in the hearts of all the staff and faculty here at the Naval Academy, Matthew is a true patriot and we mourn his loss.
May God's Blessings and Comfort be with you all.
Jim Bunn
August 25, 2009
Dear Jo Ann,
I am saddened to read of the loss you and your family are now suffering. But as you all pull together wondering how you will ever get through it, I would like to offer something that will hopefully provide some comfort. Not now, perhaps. But later it may help fill the awful emptiness that comes with the passing of someone we love.
Even from your brief account of Matthew's remarkably accomplished life, one thing shines through. He went for it. And attained it! Consider three simple facts: an appointment to the Naval Academy. Those are offered only to those teens who demonstrate a unique clarity of thought, singelmindedness of purpose -20a unique accomplishment, in and of itself. Next, he shows the physical prowess and mental acumen even fewer are able to muster - to become a Navy pilot. And then, he opts out of the relative safety of a flight deck to join his comrades on the ground.
From those three facts alone, even a stranger can see that Matthew's life was about high achievement, skill, and dedication. But there's something more. Perhaps most important of all, Matthew's life was a commitment - to service.
Jo Ann, I went into Afghanistan as an embedded journalist with NBC News, attached to the 101st Airborne, and was part of their initial landing and occupation of20Kandahar, just weeks after covering the horrible aftermath of 9/11 in New York. So I know the kind of forgotten hellhole that Matthew went into. But I also know the kind of people he was surrounded by. The kind of person that he must have been.
Top of mind. Tip of the tongue. They talk about service. Not merely to some abstract flag waving notion of country, though that love and devotion is readily apparent. They talk about service to us, their families, loved ones, and friends. They understand - and will tell you - their country IS us. Equally, they will tell you they are there for each other. Comarades-at-arms who have the other guy's back. A fierce loyalty and sel flessness that we, here back home, simply cannot contemplate, let alone comprehend.
He was there because he was one of them. One of those rare, remarkable human beings who don't just hear a higher calling - they answer it.
So as you mourn the terrible empty space in your family, I offer the following not merely as a comfort, though I hope it provides you some, rather as an insight to consider; please don't think of Matthew's as a life lost. Please think of Matthew and the way he lived his life. The way he chose for himself.
For his was not a life lost.
It was a life Given.
In Service.
With Deepest Sympathy,
Janet Hueners

Dear family of Capt. Matthew C. Freeman, I am so sorry for the loss of your hero. He was a hero in many ways to many people. He was helping to maintain our freedoms and helping to bring freedoms to those that have never known freedom before. I send many packages to contacts listed at AnySoldier.com. Your Matthew, being a volunteer contact for Any Soldier.com, was an angel to many in the field. He cared enough for his unit to help pass out mail to those who maybe did not receive any or as much mail as others. Helping them to know that they were supported, cared for and prayed for by us at home in the USA. What a true hero. Freedom isn’t free.
Thank you Capt. Matthew C. Freeman. We miss you greatly!

To the parents and family, I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I know only too well what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Grief is an individual journey, that unfortunately like my own self you now have to travel. It doesn’t matter how they died but how they lived that we should focus on. We know that each one in our military joined to make a difference in their own lives and to serve their country. Please know that each one no matter what is an American Hero and to be honored always and forever. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to hold your hand as He gives comfort to you today and for the rest of your life.

May these words written more than 140 years ago bring you comfort.
Presidential Quote from a letter from President Abraham Lincoln to the mother of five soldiers who died during the Civil War.
“I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from rendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours, to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom.”
A grateful American.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Capt. Matthew Freeman our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Matthew. And to Matthew it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Matthew, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

He always had a smile on his face and just knowing him made you a better person. My sincere sympathy to the Freeman and Hess families. Matt is a true hero and will never be forgotten.

To the Freeman Family,
You have lost a husband, son, brother, and the nation has lost another hero. It is so sad that we have to sacrifice lives for our freedom, but unfortunately that is the cost. Matthew knew the risks, but yet he volunteered for this job, that makes him a true American hero. God bless him. The Marine Corps only takes the very best, and he was obviously one of the best. You should be proud, and one day the hurt will give way to the pride that you deserve to have. We are praying for you all, thank you for sharing Matthew with the USA so that we might continue to enjoy the freedom that we have. Semper Fi. From one former Marine family to another, God bless.

It was a true honor and priviledge to stand on the side of the road as your son passed by on his return to Richmond Hill. Altho I never met him my heart broke to hear of his precious sacrifice in serving our country. May God bless you, precious family of Matthew Freeman, and give you the strength to get through the days ahead. May your pride in your son comfort you during this difficult time.

To the entire Freeman family I send out my deepest sympathies, carried on the wings of pride and righteousness that your son, an American Hero, was called, answered, served, and fell defending and protecting what obviously was embedded in him by his God and his predecessors. God and Heaven welcomed your Warrior with open arms. Commander Freeman, to you and yours, Fair seas, following winds, Sir.

As the mother of a Marine Corps officer who is deployed at this time,
I can only express my deepest sympathy for the loss of your son. I know this is a very sad time. He sounds like he was a wonderful son and also a committed individual to the Corps--what a loss. My heart goes out to all of his family.

Dear Freeman Family,
As a spouse of a Marine, son and brother of OEF Veterans, resident of Richmond Hill, Gulftream employee, and father of two RHMS students this tragedy breaks my heart and yet makes me proud in ways I can not describe. My family and I have shed many tears of sorrow and of pride for Matt and your entire family as well as what he gave for all of us. My wife and I will make sure that our kids grow up knowing the value for this country that Matthew Charles Hays Freeman and his family stood and stand for. Oohrah Devildog! You will be missed...and never forgotten!!!

We loved him tremendously. He loved his God, His Country and his Family. He knew the dangers and was eager to accept and do his part to defend the Constitution,individual freedom and traditional American values. Values and traditions that have been defended in this Nation for hundreds of years.

Our deepest sympathy yet highest respect goes to the Freeman Family and Theresa Hess. Many of us knew Captain Matt Freeman and not a bad word could be said about this remarkable young man. He really made an impression following not others, but leading his own causes and proudly showing patriotism to our country. He is a Hero and always will be remembered as so. We will never forget the sacrifice Matt made for all of us.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of Matt. He was a hero and gave the ultimate sacriface for this Nation. I knew him when he played in the Richmond Hill High Band with my daughter. I will have his family in my thoughts and prayers. I know that he gave his life doing what he loved. God bless all of you!

To say "Thank you" for such a supreme sacrifice is not nearly adequate enough. But, as an American citizen, I feel very humbled and honored to be able to say to the entire Freeman family THANK YOU. May God be with you as a Nation mourns your loss.
