Ben Tucker Obituary

In Loving Memory of Ben Tucker Savannah's Diplomat Leaves a Legacy of Music & Service - SAVANNAH - Ben Tucker, legendary jazz musician, community icon, and benevolent spirit had a smile that opened doors and established friendships all over the world. At the age of 82, on June 4, 2013, Ben Tucker was killed when a speeding car hit his golf cart after enjoying a game of golf at his second home, The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Club. Benjamin Mayor Tucker, Ph.D, affectionately known as BT Jazz, made a life-long contribution to the world of jazz. Mr. Tucker has performed and recorded over a 50-year span with various artists, including: Art Blakey, Freddy Cole, Benny Goodman, Earl Fatha Hines, Shirley Horn, B.B. King, Herbie Mann, Marian McPartland, Mel Torme and Peggy Lee to name a few. The multi-talented musician and successful business man was admired by many for his illuminating gift to bring people together regardless of age, ethnicity or belief. One of Ben's proudest accomplishments was a jazz tribute to Nelson Mandela. Ben Tucker's distinguished accomplishments were recognized by leaders in music, business, presidents, leaders throughout the world. Yet, he remained humble and was a very down to earth person. Ben established friendships with his charming smile. Ben Tucker was loved and embraced by the Savannah community where he and his wife Gloria Tucker lived for 42 years. Ben Tucker was born in Brentwood, Tennessee, December 13, 1930, to parents Joseph Sullivan Tucker and Carrie Ann (Claiborne) Tucker. Ben and his first wife were the parents of Sabra (passed 1996) and Wayne Tucker who were raised in Pasadena, California. He served in the Air Force in 1952. He later married Gloria Daly in New York (1966). She was his inspiration for one of the biggest hits in the country, he wrote for Mrs. Tucker, Coming Home Baby. Ben loved Gloria unconditionally based on his Christian belief, which he displayed in all aspects of his life. A successful musician, businessman, and community leader, Ben Tucker has influenced the world of jazz. He learned the fundamentals of music while in high school and entered Tennessee State University as music major. Ben's success as a musician did not go unrecognized. He appeared before the house Sub-Committee on Communications and the Federal Communications Commission with testimony that resulted in changing the economic strata for black entrepreneurs. A leader with a purpose, Mr. Tucker was appointed to the Selective Service Board by President Carter and reappointed by President Reagan. In 1976, Benjamin Mayor Tucker received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humanities which was conferred upon him from B. F. Lee Theological Seminary. In l979, President Carter appointed Dr. Tucker to the Advisory Committee of the Arts for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performance Art. In addition, he served on the Georgia Fair Employment Practices Advisory Board from 1979-1983. He received special recognition from the Kennedy Center's National Committee for the Performing Arts in April of 2013. The City of Savannah has benefitted from his musical talent, knowledge, leadership and charitable skills. Ben became the owner and operator of Hard-Hearted Hannah's, a jazz club, which opened in September 15, 1985 and closed 1993. In 1972, he purchased WSOK radio station in Savannah which became # 1 for 13 years. Mr. Tucker served on numerous boards and committees to use his influence to sustain organizations that benefitted the community. Community engagement was his creed and the synergy he contributed to schools, youth organizations and adult learning, colleges, churches, and community business, was a part of his life's work. Ben was a friend and partner to thousands. Ben's creative development brought him to music and his cognitive development brought him to the game of golf and leadership. He celebrated life through family, friends, music, travel, golf and mentoring, teaching and reaching the youth. A diplomatic leader and a renown champion for equality. B. T. Jazz was a shining example of service to the community. Benjamin Tucker is survived by: his wife Gloria Tucker of 47 years, Wayne Tucker (son), Ivan Daly, stepson, Reuben Tucker (twin brother) and his wife Erma; nephews Desmond, David and Derrick; nieces Loretta, and Larae; Edwin Grimsley, grandson; a host of other relatives and grand children. Mr. Tucker,

It was truly my pleasure to hear you and your guests play over the years. From the Desoto Hilton to The Pirate's House, to the Westin. As a student at Savannah State, I used to actually study to your play. Some how it made Accounting, Tax, and an assortment of other classes make sense. Along with a few cocktails. Because of you, I began to take music seriously and traditional jazz became my favorite medium of expression. Take care Chief. Keep on playing.

August 16, 2013

Gloria,
Paul and I just learned the sad news of your loss. You and Ben gave us a precious memories. The day we spent on a beach in Barbados, Ben's golf advice for Paul and the Fish Fry at Plumtree and of course the wonderful music at The Waterfront Restaurant on the island. We will keep you in our hearts. Carole and Paul Johnson,Bath,Maine

June 12, 2013

My mother and I moved to Savannah in the late 70's. Shortly after family visited and we wanted a nice evening out. We had heard of HANNAH'S in City Market. Being that I am in a wheelchair, I called first to inquire about accessibility. Once we arrived, the Maitre' D met us outside with, "Miss Marsha we have your table waiting for you." He then escorted us to a table at the very front. (Did Ben have anything to do with this???) My family was so impressed! Not just with the service, but also with Ben's talent and friendliness.

A few years later, after HANNAH'S moved upstairs at the Pirate's House, I again called for reservations. I spoke with Ben and he assured me that access was not a problem. (From that I assumed there was an elevator inside.) He told me the time I was to arrive. Once we were there he had 2 waiters at the foot of the stairs waiting to carry me up the flight of steps! Again, a table in front and he talked to me all evening between songs. Because I was wearing a red pantsuit that evening, he played 'The Lady in Red' for me.

The last time I saw Ben was a year ago on Christmas Day. Again, visiting family and I made reservations to have brunch at the Westin so we could hear Ben play. The Westin seated me/us in a room adjoining the main dining area. Unfortunately, my family and I could not hear any of the music. During a break, Ben found me. We visited and had a lengthy conversation. He apologized (It wasn't his fault!) for the seating arrangement and assured me the next time I would be able to hear the music. Unfortunately, I never made it back in time.

I was a 'nobody' to Ben. And yet, on several occasions, he took the time and possessed the compassion to make me feel like a 'somebody.' I will so miss him.

June 11, 2013

I like many others all around the world have fond memories of Ben. I work at his primary physician office and Ben was a favorite. He had an infectious smile and made everyone feels as if you were his friend and meant it. He always had a kind word, and full of life. He never met a stranger I don't think. He never forgot people either. He met my husband once at the office and then recognized him in Home Depot, called him by name and says you are Jackie's husband. Another time my husband saw Ben out trying to pay for something with his credit card and left his ID at home- my husband stepped in and offered to pay the bill which about $10 or $15 but Ben said no that his wife would be there any minute. Ben walked away from the counter to wait on Gloria, and my husband looked at the young man who refused to take his credit card without an ID and says "Don't you know who that is", the young man said no and Malcolm my husband announced "Why that is Ben Tucker the famous Jazz Musician, well known here in Savannah and all over the world. Ben was the nicest man I have ever met, and I will miss him. He loved for people to be happy and if they were not he would do what he could to help them feel that way. I will always remember these words of his "Love everything is going to be alright".

We are all better people for knowing him. We all loved him.

I met Mr. Tucker about seven years ago while working security during one of his performance. He was very kind and from that moment, I gave him the name, "all that jazz." Every time our path would cross, I greeted him with his new name and he enjoyed it. His smile would light up the world. Little did I know that our last chat at the golf tournament was just that. I know that the angels will be having a jazz of a time when he gets to heaven. To the family, may you find comfort in the memories of "all that jazz" during this time of bereavement.

Like the upright bass he mastered, Ben Tucker anchored the harmonic framework of Savannah and established the beat that many benevolent organizations marched to, and if it were left up to me I'd replace the Confederate monument in Forsyth Park with a statue of Ben and his fiddle.

Ben Tucker, a great musician & encourager of young people will be sorely missed. But so very happy to have met him. I watched him as he performed on Sunday, June 2nd, 2013 with group of children that were performing with - The Ready 4 Learning Club. The way I will remember Mr. Tucker is the huge smile on his face as he watched the children performing at the Ready 4 Learning Club event and he played two songs, "Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child and "God Bless the Child that got his Own". My grandson was the percussionist for this event and he was thrilled to share the stage with an awesome group of musician. Family know that weeping may endure for the night but joy comes in the morning. A life well lived.
