Hubert Coursey Obituary

Hubert Lamar "Toby" Coursey - SAVANNAH - Hubert Lamar "Toby" Coursey, 84, of Savannah, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family, under the care of Hospice Savannah, Inc. Toby was born in Screven County, Georgia April 20, 1926 to Pearla Graham Coursey and Walter Lamar Coursey. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. Upon returning to Savannah from Germany in 1953, he went to work at Certain Teed Products, where he retired in 1988. He was raised a Master Mason of Acacia Lodge # 452, F. & A.M's in September 1960 and received his 50-year Apron, Pin and Plaque in October 2010. Toby joined Alee Shrine in 1977, where he became a member of the Alee Flag unit. He served as Treasurer of the Flag Unit for 20 years, until his health forced him to step down. He was honored by the Nobles of the Flag Unit shortly before death with a special plaque and dinner. Toby was also an Alee Roadrunner, with over 25 hospital trips transporting children to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children in Tampa and Cincinnati. He was honored by Past Potentate Dan Hodges in 1999 with the Merit Jewel. He met the love of his life, Jane Shurling, outside of the old YWCA building on Liberty Street. They married in 1954 and celebrated their 56th anniversary in August 2010. They were blessed with a beautiful daughter but the Lord took her shortly after birth. Several years later another blessing came their way and they named her Joy Lynn Coursey. A few years after that their family was complete with the birth of their wonderful son, Robert Alan Coursey. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Walter L. (Doc) Coursey, brother Marvin G. Coursey, sister Dorothy L. Coursey, and brother William A. (Sam) Coursey. Toby is survived by his wife Jane, daughter Joy and son-in-law Terry Walker, son Robert, brother Julian Emory Coursey of Linwood, Michigan, sister Marguerite (Sister) Coursey Thompson of Statesboro, Georgia, sister-in-law Sarah Coursey of Springfield, Georgia, sister-in-law Helen Coursey of Ridgeland, South Carolina, in-laws Tony and Emma Shurling of Brooklet, Georgia, in-laws Bill and Loretta Shurling of Ellabell, Georgia, sister-in-law Judy Shurling of Rincon, Georgia, many nieces, nephews and family members, and especially faithful family dog Yulee. Memorial Services: will be held Sunday, December 12, 2010, at Fairhaven Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive. Visitation will be at 11:30 a.m. and the Memorial Service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Afterwards, family and friends are invited to attend Sunday Dinner at Alee Temple on Eisenberg Driver. I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Toby, Dave Reddick and Richard Thomas for about 2 years at Certain-teed in 1970. Toby was a very fine man and I respected him very much. Though he had a tough job, he was always cordial and could always come up with something to make a person smile. May GOD bless you all through this sad time.
