Edward Brown Obituary

Edward John Brown, Jr. - SAVANNAH - Edward John Brown, Jr. 95 went to his heavenly rest on November 15, 2010. He was born in Savannah, Georgia on March 5, 1915, son of the late Edward John Brown, Sr. and Emily Margaret Sulter Brown. He graduated from the Marist School in 1929 and from Benedictine Military Academy in 1933, where he was class Salutatorian and achieved the rank of captain. In 1934, he met his future wife, Esther Ryan, at Richard's Business College. They were married in 1941 at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. After graduation, he worked for King Dixon as an accountant and for Wilson & Company as a traveling auditor before being drafted into the army in 1943 during WWII. He served with the finance group in the 8th Army Air Corps, 96th Bomb Group, 4th Wing in England. For his service, he was awarded the European/ African/ Middle Eastern Service medal with bronze star for the Normandy Invasion, the Good Conduct medal and the WWII Victory medal. Upon discharge he returned to Savannah to work for Georgia Supply Company. Beginning in 1952, he spent two years in Buenos Aires working for Wilson Meat Packers before returning to Savannah to work again for Georgia Supply Company. In 1964, he went to work for Southern Nitrogen Company which later became Kaiser Agricultural Chemicals until his retirement in 1980. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. He was a member of The Hibernian Society, The Immaculate Conception Assembly, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, Saint Patrick's Day Parade Committee, The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and a charter member of the Holy Family Council Knights of Columbus No. 5588. He volunteered using his accounting expertise and tax counseling for the elderly as a teacher and tax preparer. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Brown Hamrick and Regina Brown Johnston, and his brothers, Jack Brown and Henry Brown and his oldest daughter, Margaret Mary Brown Parker. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Esther Ryan Brown; son, Edward John Brown III (Jan) of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Kathleen Brown Higgs (Michael) of Cordova, TN.; son-in-law, John Walter Parker of Savannah, GA; Sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Brown, Anne F. Ryan, and Theresa B. Ryan. Six grandchildren: Pamela Parker, Keith Parker (Diane), Emily Brown, Allison Brown, Katie Hallas (John) and Cameron Higgs; great-grandson Jed Parker; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a Christian Wake Service at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Francis Higgins, Celebrant and Father John Lyons, Con-Celebrant. Burial: Catholic Cemetery. Mrs. Brown, Edward, Kathleen and families,

Please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of your beloved husband and father. He was such a good man and the consumate Southern gentleman. We always appreciated his friendship and especially enjoyed seeing him every year at the Hibernian banquet. He will be truly missed, but we know his wonderful qualities will live on within his family.
