Am so sorry to see Harry has died, we knew each other in the 70's , when I was at Old Time Pickin Parlour. He made a top tension for me, I made neck he made pot,I still have it, I loved him, may he rest in peace, Danny Ferrington

What an interesting life Harry carved-out for himself, so many things to see, and so many places to visit. Therefore he was able to share this with so many others. His love for the beauty of wood, and how it could become so real in the sharing with others. A remarkable man with such eminence talent.

Harry used to visit me often in my sign shop, Banana Graphics back in the 80's. what a complex and amazing man he was. I could never get enough of his stories, his talent with wood furniture and banjos, his knowledge of so many different things...RIP Harry. I think you broke the mold.

Harry was an individual, a true individual in every sense of the word. He avoided attention and the limelight. However, it is clear to me from the time that I spent with him, that he had a very powerful positive influence on so many. I think that this had to do, to a very large degree, with his honesty and sincerity which was evident in every interaction. I can see him now in my minds eye, shepherding along the restoration of that antique Buick. He had a truly remarkable intellect. He made full use of this gift and, once again, sincerity and intellectual honesty where the hallmarks of its application. Renaissance man would be the best descriptor. The same excellence held true when he worked with his hands. He was a true master in this arena as well. He built an incredible number of the rice trunks that are to be found in the Savannah/South Carolina low country area. Not only did he build world class banjos, he carried out experiment into what made for a good sounding instrument and what sorts of modifications might work. Every detail was extremely well thought out. For example, he designed and built his own screws for his banjos, deciding on the number of threads per inch that would give the best hold under tension. He was a loyal friend. He gave unselfishly when he saw a need, often with few aware of his philanthropy. He was the primary caregiver to his mother in her later years. He was very attentive to her needs, often saying that all that was him came from his mother and father, and he could do no less and wanted to do more for her.
Harry was a unique and remarkable one-of-a-kind individual that I am proud to call my friend. When he was alive, he had a strong influence on me. Now that he is gone, I will not forget his words, his personality, his energy in living. He will continue to be an influence in my life.

Sometimes life gives one great gifts.My wife and I received such a gift in the privilege of knowing Harry. He was a good friend, and we shall always cherish the memories. Many were the 3 A.M. mornings that I would find him working in his shop, and I would sit on his antique Barbers chair while we would share stories on virtually any subject while munching on one of Tyna's apple cakes . Yes, as all that knew Harry would agree, we would indeed "walk a country mile" and still never find another man that could compare to our good friend.

Harry Lane was a very interesting and fun person to be around, Harry built and helped me install some water control trunks at Richmond Hill. I only met Mr. Harry once when I was with my mother but in that short time of me being in his presence I felt something special and I was touched. He was a great man and I will always remember him. He will be missed.

Liked Harry a lot. Met him some 40 years ago. I have two banjos he made. He was truely his own man. Will miss him.

Harry Lane was one of the great loves of my life. He was a true southern gentleman to the end. I have fond memories of him taking me to New York on the train and to the plantation where he grew up. I can still see him trying to squeeze into that jacket he hadn't worn since college before we went to the Peacock Lounge. He loved my apple pie. He was good to my daughter. He was such an artist and an original. He introduced me to Ayn Rand and Tom Wolfe and opened my eyes to the beauty of exotic woods. My thoughts go out to his family, who were lucky to have him as one of their own. He will be missed and remembered always as a very bright light in a mundane world.

Still in shock...what a great man you was to us and can't say thank you enough for all you did for us. We missed the visits to the station and seeing your beautiful wood work when we left downtown and the southside. you will be missed in so many was but mostly for your cents of humour. rest in piece harry and enjoy all the many travels you will now make.

I was so saddened by this news today. Mr. Harry was one special man. His intelligence and his wit made him one charming man. I will truly miss him and his comical stories and antics. His talents were limitless. May God bless all of you at this time and comfort your family. He will truly be missed by the staff at Dean Wilkes Auto Body. He was not only a customer but became a friend as well.
