Joyce Lamond Obituary

Joyce Davey Lamond

Joyce Davey Lamond of Lakewood Village passed away at the age of 90 at St. Mary's Hospital in Long Beach on July 11, 2013. Joyce was born on October 11, 1922 in New York. Her parents had just emigrated from England and after Joyce's birth they decided that California should be their home. Van Nuys was selected. After Ethel, her mother, died in 1933, Joyce and her father, Reginald, moved to Washington State to try farming. They eventually returned to Van Nuys where Joyce attended Van Nuys High School and met her future husband, Robert Lamond. With World War II underway, Robert joined the Air Corps and was sent to Texas, Joyce followed him there and on July 11, 1943 they were married by the Chaplain at Ellington Field. Joyce followed Robert across the states until he finished his training in California and was sent to the Pacific for the last year of the war. When he returned home to Long Beach, where Joyce was living, he was greeted by his baby daughter, Karen. They settled in Lakewood Village where they lived for 68 years. A second daughter, Robin, was born after Robert returned from the Korean War. Joyce and her family loved the outdoors. They backpacked together in the California Mountains and joined the Sierra Club. For all the time she spent serving refreshments at Club meetings in Long Beach and at the cleanups at the Naval Weapon Station's nature reserve the Angeles Chapter of the Club gave her a special award. She was never happier than when she could cook and entertain. She volunteered at the Red Cross blood bank and worked with veterans at the VA hospital. Joyce is survived by Robert and their daughter, Karen Sadik-Khan of Old Greenwich, CT; Karen's children: Karim, his wife, Lauren and their children, Charlotte and Zachary of Lincolnshire, IL, Kadria of Rowayton,CT, Atlan of Old Greenwich, CT; and by Joyce's daughter: Robin Wurthman, husband, Michael of Conifer, CO and daughters, Hailey and Hannah of Conifer. Joyce suffered a stroke in 2007 during a family Christmas in Connecticut and recovered to return to Lakewood Village. In mid May 2013, her health took a turn for the worse and she died on July 22nd with Robert at her side. Joyce will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother. Donations may be made in her name to the PD Pitchford Animal Village, 7700 E. Spring Street, Long Beach. Please sign the guest book at www.presstelegram.com/obits.
