Evelyn Handwerk Obituary

Evelyn L. Handwerk, 90, of Schuylkill Haven, passed away Friday at Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street.
Evelyn was born in Moorhead, Minn., June 21, 1921. She was a daughter of the late Lars and Emma Hexom Carlson.
She was the widow of Eugene J. Handwerk, who preceded her in death on July 10, 2005.
Evelyn was a 1940 graduate from Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., where she studied elementary education.
She worked as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse for La Mars School District, North Dakota, for 2 years.
She then served in the Coast Guard during World War II.
Evelyn moved to Pennsylvania and attended Kutztown University, receiving a bachelor's in elementary education. She worked as a teacher for the Blue Mountain School District from 1957 to 1983.
She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Schuylkill Haven.
Evelyn also belonged to the Schuylkill County Quilters Guild as a Charter Member, St. Paul's UCC Quilters Guild and the Pennsylvania Teachers Association.
In addition to her husband, she is also preceded in death by a son, Glenn Handwerk; and a great-grandson, Derek Handwerk.
Evelyn is survived by two sons, Gary Handwerk and Philip Handwerk; a daughter, Connie Boyer; a grandson, Matthew Handwerk and his wife, Jessica; great-grandchildren, Autumn and Tyler Handwerk.
Memorial service and interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Evelyn's name may be sent to St. John's UCC Memorial Fund, 121 E. Main St., P.O. Box 118, Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972. To extend condolences to the family online, please visit www.gsesfuneralhomes.com. As another "married into the Handwerk family" relative, I have appreciated the hearty support of the Handwerk Reunions provided by Evy. She served faithfully and well as a Handwerk Reunion Committee Member.
In the recent past she provided some beautifully crafted Handwerk works of art and history, treasured by those with the privilege of owning them.
She (along with her gifts, talents and participation) will be missed by the larger Handwerk Family.
