Helen Pommerening Obituary

Helen "Betsy" Pommerening

November 13, 1920 ~ November 11, 2013

I Am Betsy

I grew up in a small town in Michigan where we spoke as much German as English. I always wanted to be in medicine and got my wish at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. World War II had me in uniform helping those recover who suffered from war trauma. I always loved Dr. Bob, and we were married in the mid-1940s. He took me to Seattle where we had five sons - one right after another. His early death forced a major change in my life. I worked for many years in the hospital as the volunteer coordinator. I was bitten badly by the travel bug. For years I led tours all over the world. There are too many countries to count. I watched my boys grow-- watched them lead divergent lives-- accepted who they were without rancor. I aged without regrets. I accepted the life I was given. Losing my oldest son was almost as hard as losing my husband. I waited in peace. God was always a part of my life, and still is.

Betsy was a warm an wonderful landlady and woman. She welcomed my husband and I into her home and we enjoyed a few wonderful years in Seattle alongside her. I've never forgotten her kindness, her love for life, and her stories about her family and travels. We were blessed to have known her.

"Aunt" Betsy is a wonderful example of a Godly-woman living a life focused on others. I have many fond memories of her kindnesses to me and our family. She'll be remembered every time we enjoy eating "Aunt Betsy's Salmon" or view a mountain stream!

Besty, my sister-in-law, was my role model throughout life. Always loved, always will be. How blessed we were!

She was absolutely the best aunt a girl could ask for....how lucky are those of us who knew her. - Chris

So sorry for your loss. I met your Mom through your neighbors, the Andersons. There was a time when my family spent Thanksgiving and Christmas parties with them. The Anderson twins knew you (brothers) and I met you all and your Mom through them. My mother, Bede, knew your parents for many years. I remember your mom as a very vibrant woman who always had a story to tell and made all who visited feel right at home. Respectfully, Bob Sylvester
