Christopher Manning Obituary

Christopher W. Manning

Chris died January 7, 2013 in San Diego, CA as a result of a motorcycle accident. Survived by his parents, Brian and Stephanie Manning; his sister, Jacqueline; grandparents, Richard Manning, and John and Donna Sifferle; his aunts and uncles, Bruce Manning, Patty Manning, Anne Good (Bill), Michael Manning (Nga), and Sue Sifferle; his cousins; and many friends.

Chris was born in Seattle, WA in September 1986. He was raised in Shoreline, WA. Chris was a good Catholic man who attended St. Luke Church, and School in Shoreline, and graduated from O'Dea High School in Seattle. He loved O'Dea and the good times he experienced there. While at O'Dea Chris participated in Cross Country, Wrestling, and the Latin Club. Chris was an avid high school wrestler, wrestling for 4 years at O'Dea. During his senior year, he wrestled at the WA State Wrestling Tournament. After high school, he attended Iowa State University under an NROTC scholarship where he studied engineering and exercise science. Chris loved the State of Iowa, and his time at Iowa State University. Following the completion of his junior year, he decided to relinquish his scholarship and enlist in the Navy. Chris initially reported to BUD/S, Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training. Chris made it through the training pipe line all the way up to day 3 of hell week which is a challenge in itself. After that, he received orders to the USS THACH where he served as an Operations Specialist, and member of the VBSS team (visit, board, search, and seizure) which specializes in counter drug operations and anti-piracy missions. Chris loved the US Navy, and all the people he was fortunate to work with in the Navy. During Chris's first deployment on the USS THACH the ship circumnavigated South America. He stepped foot in over 12 countries. He went through the Straights of Magellan, the Panama Canal, and he was only 500 miles away from Antarctica. He was both a shell back and a moss back, stood in the southern most city in the world, saw the Southern Cross, and did a cross fit workout in the snow on the ocean off of the coast of Chile of which he was very proud. Chris was also a part of a historic flag raising ceremony in El Salvador, where he helped raise the American flag for the first time in over 60 years.

Chris' hobbies included skate-boarding, learning the "romance" languages, motorcycles, fishing and boating. An avid physical fitness enthusiast, he always kept himself in peak physical condition. He also enjoyed cooking.

Chris is loved by his friends that he served with. He was a hard worker whose tenacious attitude helped him excel at everything he did in life. He helped anyone in need, and was dedicated to his friends, family and his country. He could make you smile no matter what the scenario was. We will miss Chris's smile and sense of humor. Goodbye Chris your family and friends will miss you.

Funeral Mass will celebrated at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 19th at St. Luke Catholic Church, 17533 N. 175th St., Shoreline, WA 98133.

Donations in memory of Chris Manning can be sent to O'Dea High School Development Office, 802 Terry Ave., Seattle, WA 98104.

I still remember those days of wrestling and cross country. You won’t believe this, but I finally got married 3/15/24 to an amazing Filipina. Her name is Laravem and I am living in Hawaii! It would have been awesome to have you come visit. I am sure you’re looking down on all of us. My wife wants me to be an evangelist God speaks to us in many ways. He speaks to me through the people I meet. My dad is still coaching at O’Dea High School. I think we finally took first in Metros. Monte Kohler named the new field after himself and they gave O’Dea a huge facelift both with the building and the programs offered. I still haven’t yet come up with that book yet, “The Book of Mikeisms”. I am sure I will eventually. Thanks for looking after me all those years. We’ve had plenty of laughs for sure.

It was a pleasure to serve with you on the USS Thach. You were always honest and I could trust you to get the job done. You had your own way of doing things and that will be missed. From seeing you do your crazy workouts to working on the deckplates. You will be missed. Fair winds and following seas.

Dear Stephanie, Brian and Jacqueline,
Tough I connot begin to imagine what you are going through, try to remember, it's the little things, the small, everyday occurrences that you'll remember. The laughs, the stories, the smiles. And even though it seems like you can never recover from your loss, it is these very memories that will help push the pain away and bring back the smiles.

Dear Brian, Stephanie and Jacqueline -

Our oldest son PJ was first to let me know that Chris had passed, I just could not believe it. Years and years of seeing your family right in front at church, ever faithful and present. I am just so very sorry! In true O'Dea manner, Chris was very kind and enthusiastic to answer PJ's questions in addition to ease any concerns as an ingoing freshman. He extended the theme of brotherhood without hesitation. You raised a wonderful young man and his passing is a loss for all that knew him and those that will now never have the opportunity to know such a genuinely good man. He will be remembered fondly always. Gone to soon but impressive in those years as he clearly blessed those he knew. He lived life well...
Love and Blessings, Dave, Steph, PJ, Corbin, Casey and Jackie

Brian and family, I am so sorry you had to experience this type of loss. He was such a young and dedicated man. I cannot express my smypathy for all of you enough. Having a son almost the same age and with the same dedication to life brings my heart to a stop. I pray that all of you make it though this and keep Chris close to you and talk to him daily. What a hero!

He was one of the smartest people I'd ever met, not to mention honest, generous and hilarious. Chris Manning was one of the first friends I ever made in high school, and we remained friends till his tragic passing. I'm still in shock, but am graced by nothing but wonderful memories of Chris. He was a talented athlete, had an incredible love for music and film, and he cared for his family and friends deeply. He would do anything for them.

His big smile and amazing laugh are stuck in my mind and will be forever. Miss you, Chris. You were a rare and wonderful person.

Brian, Stephanie and family:

I am very sorry for your loss.

Chris and I were good friends in college (You and I met a few times at a Bunker party or two). He always had a knack for bringing a positive view to even the darkest of things and I will always think of him as the kind goofy guy I grew to know and admire.

Chris touched many hearts and lives. Thank you for raising such a wonderful man!

With Love

I was shocked when my dad called me yesterday and told me of Chris' passing. I am sorry for your loss and can't imagine the pain you're going through. Chris was an awesome friend, teammate, and fellow classmate. Some of my best memories were from wrestling camps and the occasional bar scene. Chris Manning looked after many of us: Dan Boze, Matt O'Hare, Jalonn Wilkins, Eamon Rutledge, myself, and others. It was as if he was our older brother to some degree. Chris was a bit of a jokester, and fun to be with, but he always made sure everyone else was taken care of before he tended to himself.
