Joseph Landry Obituary

Joseph Raymond Edward Landry

Joseph Raymond Edward Landry

was born May 14, 1929 in Stanwood, Washington and died January 23, 2015 in Edmonds, Washington.

Ray grew up in a very happy family with 12 sisters and brothers. He was the last remaining sibling of this large family. He attended all his school years in Stanwood, Washington and graduated from Twin City High School in 1947, where he was student body president in his senior year.

Ray sailed with Foss Tug and then in 1952 was hired to go to Alaska as engineer on a fishing tender for Libby McNeil and Libby. Thus started a long career in Alaska. When Wards Cove Packing Company purchased Libby McNeil, Ray began working for Wards Cove Packing Co. continually until his retirement. He worked at salmon plants at Alitak, Ekuk, Wards Cove, Ketchikan and finally as manager of the Wards Cove plant at Kenai, Alaska. After retirement he helped establish a joint Russian-

American processing plant on Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East. This was a great adventure for him and topped off his career. Ray loved flying his own plane 90G, and early in his career began to fly to Alaska and back for work as well as pleasure around the Pacific Northwest. He loved landing on the beaches of Alaska and taking everyone for rides over the glaciers and wilderness of Alaska. He and his wife Beth particularly loved the years of their Alaska flying.

After Ray retired, he bought a 41-foot power boat and motored all over Puget Sound and Canada, making one trip back to Ketchikan.

Ray was a gifted mechanic and was famous for his knowledge of motors and almost anything else mechanical. If you needed it fixed, he could and would gladly do it.

Ray was a true friend, and a kind, gentle man of great integrity. He is survived by his wife, Beth and many nieces, nephews, plus great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are being held at St. Lukes Parish, 322 N 175th St.,

Shoreline WA on February 5, at 12:00 Noon.

Ray Landry was the Cannery Superintendant my first year in the Alaska Seafood Industry which was 1983 for me. Over the years I came to realize what a delightful man Ray was and is and when I saw him this December at a party he looked to be in the same great mindset and health we have all become accustomed to since Ray retired about 20 years ago. All of us who know Ray should offer thanks and blessing to Beth

I worked for Ray as a machinist in the Wards Cove cannery in Kenai, first in the can shop and then down in the cannery. The one thing that stands out about Ray for me was his commitment to our Catholic faith. He would take me in to town for Mass when he couldn't arrange the priest saying Mass in the mess hall. He was good man and I learned a lot from him. "Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy."

I met Ray (and Beth) through my brother Mike Van Hollebeke.....Mike worked for Ray at Wards Cove Packing for a number of years and they have been friends ever since. Ray part of Mikes life as a friend for so many years along with mentoring him much like a father would. Ray and Beth were so very kind to Mike...and Mike loved them dearly as a couple and each one individually. I have heard the phrase for so many years from Mike " I am going to Ray and Beth's".....it will be a huge adjustment for Mike say and also for me to hear "I am going to Beth's".....rest in peace Ray...hope to see you again. I first met Ray at Ekuk, Alaska during the summer of 1965. My dad was the cannery foreman and Ray was his first machinist. Dad wanted to make sure that I learned something that summer so he had me work with Ray as one of his helpers. Dad was right, I did learn something but it wasn't just about machinery. Ray thought me patience, understanding and generally how a employee should conduct himself. That was 50 years ago and the lesson was well learned. Since then I have lost my dad, mom and brother. One constant at all of their services was Ray Landry's attendance. God holds a special place for people like Ray. Hopefully I'll meet him again.
