Mr. Ray Landry was a good man, a very good man.

Ray Landry was the Cannery Superintendant my first year in the Alaska Seafood Industry which was 1983 for me. Over the years I came to realize what a delightful man Ray was and is and when I saw him this December at a party he looked to be in the same great mindset and health we have all become accustomed to since Ray retired about 20 years ago. I worked for Ray as a machinist in the Wards Cove cannery in Kenai, first in the can shop and then down in the cannery. The one thing that stands out about Ray for me was his commitment to our Catholic faith. He would take me in to town for Mass when he couldn't arrange the priest saying Mass in the mess hall. I met Ray (and Beth) through my brother Mike Van Hollebeke.....Mike worked for Ray at Wards Cove Packing for a number of years and they have been friends ever since. Ray part of Mikes life as a friend for so many years along with mentoring him much like a father would. Ray and Beth were so very kind to Mike...and Mike loved them dearly as a couple and each one individually. I have heard the phrase for so many years from Mike " I am going to Ray and Beth's".....it will be a huge adjustment...

I first met Ray at Ekuk, Alaska during the summer of 1965. My dad was the cannery foreman and Ray was his first machinist. Dad wanted to make sure that I learned something that summer so he had me work with Ray as one of his helpers. Dad was right, I did learn something but it wasn't just about machinery.
