Matthew Smith Obituary

Matthew John Smith, Jr.

Matthew (Mickey) Smith Jr. was a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend. He died after a long 11 year struggle with Lymphoma on Monday, March 28, 2016.

Mickey was born and raised in New York, the son of Matthew and Muriel Smith. He was a graduate of Geneseo University. He relocated to California to begin his career and then transitioned to Woodinville, Washington. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lucy (Doggrell) Smith and their sons Harrison and Matthew. He also leaves behind 7 brothers and sisters who reside on the east and west coast.

Mickey had a very successful career as a Healthcare Sales Executive in multiple companies including Toshiba, Phillips and Siemens. Throughout his career he never lost sight of the impact that alcoholism had on individuals and was a long time member of Alcoholics Anonymous, being sober for 33 years. He was a sponsor and mentor to many in the program and provided support, guidance and comfort.

He was known by his family and friends for his tremendous sense of humor and support for everyone. He brought people together, healed sadness and instilled joy.

He will be remembered at a Memorial Service on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Bellevue Christian Reformed Church, 1221 148th Ave N.E., Bellevue, WA 98007, www.bellevuecrc.org. Lucy ~
Mickey has been in my prayers for a long time as he stuggled with the ups and downs of Lymphoma. To hear of his passing was a shock and my heart goes out to you and the boys. I hope you are able to find some comfort knowing that so many friends and family care and will be there for you in this difficult time.
Looking back on our poker games with Mickey, John and Michael were just the best - such good times, such good memories.
Love to you,
Lou Ann Isler

Lucy, You may not remember me but I was the front office secretary at the Irvine, CA Schindler Elevator Office. I always loved seeing and working and visiting with Mickey and his long dear friend, Dennis Cooney who we dearly miss also from his early passing. I have wondered how you all were doing over the years as I lost touch with all lot of my favorites. I did call Mickey years ago right after you moved there as I have a sister in the Seattle area but due to the timing we weren't able to meet up on that trip. I have been away from Schindler for over 12 yrs. after the Schindler/Millar merge and I was let go. I always enjoyed working at our little office and miss our "little family" we had in the Irvine Office. Unfortunately times change and people move on. My deepest sympathy to you and I hope you and the boys are doing OK during this trying time. God Bless him in his battle of 11 yrs with his disease. I know how that can be on a family. Lucy, Harrison, and Matthew

I had the honor and privilege to get to know and grow close to Mickey in a short amount of time. As a direct employee of his for 3 years, we talked and interacted daily and saw each other often. I grew to love and respect him both professionally and personally. I, like so many others, had my life enriched because I could call him my co-worker, and more importantly, my friend. And although his impact on my professional life is significant, it is our personal relationship that I cherish and miss the most. We often swapped stories of our lives at home, the challenges of raising our boys into young men, and how to love and honor our wives better. I know He loved the three of you immensely. Please know all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Lucy,
Jim and I are so very deeply sorry to hear of the passing of Mickey. He was such an inspiration and tremendous presence in the many AA meetings we shared with him over the years. He had wisdom, compassion, humor and strength of character. He made any meeting he was in so much better. We feel lucky to have known and loved Mickey along with countless other members of AA. We are trying to rearrange our Saturday to be able to attend the Memorial but if not possible know that we will be there in spirit. And we both send our deepest condolences to you and your two sons. Love, Debbie Prudden and Jim Hayes

I had a great deal of respect for Mickey as our leader and great motivator, he hired me at Toshiba and I am thankful for the great opportunity he presented to me.
I knew how important his family was to him!

April 4, 2016

For years I sat next to Mickey many, many times at the Better Odds Sober meetings. One day I broke my arm and was in a great deal of pain, and didn't know what to do so I went to a meeting. He had such empathy and kindness that it immediately made me feel better. It wasn't so much what he said as his actions.

What a fine man. I will miss him.

I met Mickey at one of my first AA meetings and our New York roots allowed us to connect from the beginning. His impact on me was immediate and has stayed with me to this day. His role in my decision to pursue my art form as a career was pivotal. I am so grateful to have known him.

Mickey and his family lived next door to my family in Smithtown when we were younger. He was always so upbeat, positive and to me, a really good person. I pray that all his family find comfort in the peace he knows now.

Dear Lucy
I had the great fortune to know Mickey at both Siemens and at Toshiba. He really did light up a room with his passion, humor, and his goodwill towards everyone. His energy and drive set the tone for his teams. None of us who worked for and with Mickey could have enjoyed the level of success we achieved without his leadership and friendship. I will be forever grateful and I celebrate his life and spirit! His laugh would shake a room! Such a wonderful guy!

I had a chance to work and travel with Mickey at Siemens. He was always a positive team player and I have always missed him since he left. I wanted to tell his family that he was an individual that left his positive mark in my professional career.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Wish I could've known him -- his force of life and character radiate through the stories shared by his nephew, who so clearly adored him.
