Dr. Alvin Thompson brought me on as a board colleague for the Puget Sound Blood Center because he thought I could contribute. He also became my friend.
More importantly, he was a role model, a father figure, a living example of how an African American man in our society can model behaviors we all can learn from…whether in his work, his charitable activities, his leisure pursuits, Dr. Thompson applied himself with imagination and enthusiasm, with decency and energy and with intelligence and compassion.
Dr. Thompson went through life giving, not taking—doing, improving, suggesting, volunteering, leading. Most of us fall into one category or another—some of us are nouns, others adjectives. Dr. Thompson was a verb, and an active one!
My appreciation and affection for him is beyond easy expression.
All of us whose lives he touched and influenced are his survivors, and his reverberations continue.

I had the pleasure, and it was indeed a pleasure, of being mentored by Dr. Thompson when I made a mid-life career change to become a physician. He had a way of pointing out possibilities. His most memorable compliment to me was "You're competent." I have valued his wisdom, remembering in particular his observation that "If you don't care who gets the credit, you can get a lot done." While we worked on some community projects together, I regret that I never heard him sing. My deepest sympathies to his family.

As medical director of the Central Seattle Panel of Consultants I have had the great honor of knowing and working with Dr. Thomas for nearly ten years. His intelligence, compassion, and warmth inspired all of the doctors at the panel. He exemplified all of the qualities of a true physician, making the world a better place with him in it. I will miss him very much. Richard Marks, M.D.

My Father, Dr. James D. Layman was a fond colleague of Dr. Thompson. I remember my father talking of joining practices and serving on different boards while practicing Medicine together at Providence. Dr. Thompson was one of the few true friends who visited my father several times while he was ill and his kind and compassion to my father was greatly noticed. Both of those men knew the meaning to true health care. I met Dr. Thompson several time and I remember going to his office on 1st hill.. He was truly a pillar in both the community and the medical community. His family are in my thoughts and prayers

Dear Faye and Family,
My heart goes out to you in the loss of dear Dr. Thompson. What lovely memories I have of visiting you both with my
parents when I was a child and most recently when my father (Bucky) and his fiance (Charlene Drew Jarvis) visited
last summer, and we dined
together in your beautiful home on Mercer Island. I was weary
from months of job hunting and
as usual you and Dr Thompson had so many
encouraging words. I am
happy to report that it wasn't
long after that dinner that I
found a wonderful position
at Premera Blue Cross. Dr
Thompson will live on in so
many he mentored.
Let us not let too many more
days pass before we see
each other again.
With love and heartfelt
fondness from the Moses
Family
