Leonard Rose Obituary

Leonard Dee ROSE Leonard Dee Rose passed away on 8 April, 2011 at his home in Shoreline Washington at the age of 88. He was born on 6 August, 1922 in St. Louis Missouri. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Shirley Rose, his three children Mike Rose, Debbie Rose, Tammi Johnston and her husband Drew, three grandchildren Rex Eric Lammersdorf and his wife Amberle, Blake Rose and Lauren Rehm. Leonard was a young 19 year old serving on the light cruiser USS Raleigh when it was attacked at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. He was one of the deck gun crew credited with downing 5 Japanese aircraft during the attack. The USS Raleigh survived a torpedo hit and a direct bomb hit that penetrated the ship and exploded after exiting through the hull. After Pearl Harbor repairs the USS Raleigh went on for troop escort duty to Samoa and the Fiji Islands before participating in the Aleutian Island Campaign in Alaska. Leonard was the 6' gun mount captain during the bombardment of Japanese troops and airfields on the islands of Attu and Kiska. He went on to serve on the USS Philadelphia (CL-41) and finished his tour in the Navy in 1947 serving on the battleship USS Wisconsin as Boatswain's Mate 1st Class. Leonard married Shirley Van Dyke (Goodman) in 1954 and worked in the road construction business until retiring in 1984. After retirement his greatest pleasures were frequent remodeling of their home in Shoreline, gardening, traveling throughout the southwest and Mexico in their RV and spending time with their children and grandchildren. There will be no local funeral services and a military memorial ceremony will be held by the Navy at Pearl Harbor for the family at a later date.
